Perspectives in Parenting

Perspectives in parenting, mom with special needs child coloring

Sometimes you just need to hear the ideas, thoughts, and opinions of other parents. Our Perspectives in Parenting section is focused on providing a place for you to find out what other moms are thinking and how they are handling the issues that go along with the hard job of being a parent.

There are a lot of different perspectives in parenting and New Orleans Mom is a place where these different ideas can be shared. We strive to provide not just valuable information to mothers across the Crescent City, but also ideas about how to think about the issues in their lives.

In our Perspectives in Parenting section, you’ll find lots of stories about the everyday events, problems, annoyances, and issues that we all face as moms. We talk about the household and the challenges of keeping everyone in the family working together.  We offer tips on how to recognize and reflect on the good things in our lives. We also tackle difficult topics about our society and culture

Some of our perspectives in parenting stories offer key advice on wellness. We take you through some of the challenging parts of motherhood, like how and when to use a breast pump, while also offering an amusing look at alternative uses of breastmilk

Our writers talk about important things that Moms in the Big Easy need to know, such as how to teach financial responsibility to your children or how to survive the stresses of the holiday season.

With more than 30 contributors to New Orleans Mom, we offer our readers unique Big Easy perspectives in parenting that they won’t find anywhere else.

“Why do you get so angry?” My husband gently asks me sometimes. He doesn’t understand, and frankly I don’t fully understand either. Sometimes I think things are sexist when the “guy doesn’t mean anything by it.” Sometimes I feel violated...
A little over a year ago (in the midst of my husband’s year-long military deployment), I started feeling this growing desire to do something different with my life. I have been a physical therapist for 12 years, and absolutely...
If you dread photographs, headshots, family pictures, and basically any photo experience because you don't like the way you look, you're not alone. Our team at work was taking headshots this week, and I was reminded of how uncomfortable...
Today on the blog – in conjunction with Touro Infirmary – we are absolutely thrilled to be opening a dialog about sleep through our “Rest Assured: You Are Not Alone” series. As moms we are all often sleep deprived,...
Some people, gurus, etc would probably frown on our bedtime routine.  I have a 6-year-old boy, a 4-year-old girl, and a 6-month-old. My husband and I lay with the two older kids every night until they fall asleep. We always...
Why I Will Always Buy Girl Scouts Cookies It’s almost time for the girl scout cookies to make their annual return into our lives! Let’s first talk about where to find them. You can usually spot tables outside of your local...
New to New Orleans and a first time mother, I craved community. As a breastfeeding mother, I had questions and needed reassurance. This led me to my first La Leche League meeting in January of 2010. What I most...

40 Things I Just Simply Don't Understand There are things in life I would like to understand, but probably never will. I recently asked my Facebook friends for their opinions: what are things that occur or exist, that just do...
I've been wearing the same "mom necklace" almost every day for the past four or five years. It's a miniature portrait of the boys, framed in silver on a chain from which hang tiny discs with their first initials....
"This is Margaret, she has four kids, can you believe that?!" That is how I am introduced to people these days. This is always followed by "wow, you are amazing," or some sort of compliment with the word "super mom"...
Last week during a virtual hangout with a group of girlfriends, I vented about how badly I wish my son’s daycare was open. Working from home full-time with a baby certainly was never a desire of mine, but nonetheless,...
