New Orleans Pure Barre, as told by Linzy
I had been hearing about Pure Barre on Magazine Street and how amazing the work outs are. I finally got the opportunity to try it out and let me tell you it definitely fulfills everything that I have heard. Here is how it works.
Prior to going to the class, you have to go on their website, purebarre.com, to find the Louisiana locations. Select between the Mandeville and New Orleans locations. Check out the class schedule and find the time you want. Sign up and you have reserved your spot (this is necessary since the class is limited in size to ensure everyone has enough space).
I know it is hard sometimes as a mom to pre-plan your schedule of when you can work out. But the beauty of this is that if you are signed up you are more committed to going.
When you arrive you check in and grab your equipment. Make sure to wear yoga pants and socks with grippy things on the bottom. Shorts are definitely not recommended. Remember to bring water.
The equipment for Pure Barre is a mat, a small ball, free weights, and a resistance band paired with a ballet barre. The entire exercise program is focused on small movements and strength building. For the hour class you move through different muscle groups: abs, seat, hips and arms. Think more along the lines of yoga than Jazzercise.
Lift. Tone. Burn. is the motto. Let me tell you, you will feel the burn! If your muscles are shaking, you are doing it right! It is awesome. It really lets you know that you are making a difference in the shape of your body.
The atmosphere is very relaxed and peaceful. The lights are off, sunlight is beaming in from Magazine Street and energetic music is keeping the pace up.
The instructor was super friendly and helped me learn the movements and motions. I admit that it does feel quite spastic to get started until you get the technique down. I am pretty sure that I will struggle to walk tomorrow because I know I worked my muscles very hard.
There was a pregnant mom in my class, and they tailored the movements to meet her needs. They also have a New Mom Bounce Back program that is a special rate and class structure to get moms back in their jeans!
The first class is free to anyone who wants to try it out. I encourage you to go try it and see for yourself, but beware you may be hooked!
I know that life sometimes gets in the way of an exercise routine. But this is something that I can say I left feeling like my mind was clear and ready to take on the rest of the day.
Mandeville Pure Barre, as told by Elizabeth
One evening, after picking up sushi for dinner, I passed by the Pure Barre location in Mandeville before it officially opened. I had never heard of it before, so when I got home, I did some googling. It was all very intriguing to me but intimidating at the same time. Each time I would pass the studio though, I would check out the class schedule later that night without ever registering. Well, last week, I took my first pure barre class.
Since you have to register in order to hold your place for the class, it ensures that you block out the time frame in your schedule. At least for me anyway, since too many times it is easier to abandon my workout plans in order to catch up on housework or, let’s be honest here, veg out on the couch after a long day at work. So finally, last Tuesday evening, I anxiously walked into the Mandeville studio and was met by the instructor with a huge smile! She immediately made me feel at ease and explained what equipment I needed and how the class would work. Of course, I had to pick up a pair of the grippy socks, if for no other reason than to have a little souvenir.
Throughout the class, there was clear direction on how to perform the different moves with correct form. With the upbeat music and encouragement from the instructor, there was little time to think about what was coming next. When they say “Lift. Tone. Burn,” they aren’t joking. When they warned that our muscles would be shaking, they weren’t kidding. When they said push through it, you’ll feel great when it’s done, they weren’t lying. I texted a friend upon leaving class that every muscle in my body felt like jello. But the next morning, when I wasn’t sure if I could even get out of bed, I knew I was hooked. And I can’t wait to go back to take another class.
