Fit Over 40 :: How ITF Prime’s Custom Workouts Changed Everything

Fit Over 40 :: How ITF Prime’s Custom Workouts Changed Everything

If you know me at all, you know that to describe me as ‘competitive’ would be the understatement of the year. This served me well in my 20s and 30s, as I organized groups of friends to run every neighborhood 5K and a few half marathons. We once took on a Tough Mudder just nine months after I’d given birth and, looking back, I’m still baffled by how I pulled that off.

Then I turned 40. My knee hurt, my back hurt, high intensity movement gave me a headache, <insert other complaints here>. I tried a whole bunch of different workouts and gyms across the city of New Orleans but nothing stuck. I love strength training, but popping into a big box super gym, alone, to wander aimlessly around the weight room was just too much for me to think about. And don’t get me started on the monotony of cardio machines.

Furthermore, all the group workouts I tried presented the same pesky problem, with my need to make everything a competition. To be clear, no one was competing with me – I’m sure that they didn’t even know I was in class — but every time a 20-something classmate beat me in a foot race (which was every time) or did more burpees than me (also every time) or lifted more weight than me (not every time, but close), my self-esteem would take a hit. I had to find something that fit my current stage in life.

Prime has modified workouts, tailored just to me.

Enter Iron Tribe Fitness’s Prime Program, a tailored fitness experience designed to meet you where you are on your athletic journey. I began my Prime program over the summer and have seen a significant transformation, not only in my strength but also in alleviating some of my 40-something aches and pains. My persistent knee injury became a thing of the past, thanks to my trainer’s modified workouts aimed at strengthening the surrounding muscles.

From my personal experience, here are the top reasons I wholeheartedly encourage all my readers and friends to give Prime workouts a shot:

Personalized Programming

Prime offers workouts with the same fundamental movements as regular functional fitness classes but they are uniquely designed to suit your individual goals. I talked with my trainer about my specific aches, pains, and apprehensions, and she designed a program that challenged me while at the same time was easier on my body. BONUS: The only person I am competing with is me!

Tailored Nutrition Guidance

For those inclined towards structured nutrition plans, Prime offers guidance tailored to your lifestyle. These plans are not overwhelming, emphasizing the inclusion of more protein and greens and encouraging healthy swaps. Personally, I’ve had my share of anxiety from previous food plans (thanks to my Weight Watchers days), but the good news is that Prime’s workouts are effective even without strict dietary “rules”.

Accountability and Check-Ins

The structured accountability built into Prime ensures that my absence won’t go unnoticed. If I miss my regular time slot, my trainer will reach out, not to guilt-trip me, but out of genuine concern. I rarely miss a workout, though, especially since it feels achievable now!

Inclusive Atmosphere and Personal Connections

A special shout-out to Melinda and Colby! They not only know every member by name but also personally welcome each one when they arrive. Their relatability and willingness to share their own fitness journey’s ups and downs make them exceptional coaches.

Pushups are not for me anymore, but I can do them with help!

Clean, Comfortable Facilities

I’m sure I’m not the only one who is super grossed out when following a sweaty bodybuilder onto a weight machine. I’ve tried outdoor ‘boot camp’ workouts to avoid this situation, but dealing with the summer heat in the South makes it near impossible. The ITF trainers, on the other hand, maintain a high standard of cleanliness, even mopping the floor after each session. Workouts take place indoors, in a comfortable environment with air conditioning.

I want to emphasize that my trainers at Iron Tribe did not request this endorsement; I genuinely believe that Prime workouts have revolutionized my fitness routine. However, when I informed them of my intention to write this, they graciously extended an offer to NOLA Mom readers: Two weeks of complimentary access to the Prime program, available on a first-come, first-served basis. Reach out via email [email protected] ASAP to reserve your spot!

Hope to see you in the gym!
