Two Generations, One Opportunity: Why LSU New Orleans Remains a Smart Choice for Families
For many New Orleans families, choosing a college is more than prestige or name recognition. It is about finding a place where your child can succeed, feel supported, and graduate with opportunities ahead without creating overwhelming financial stress for the family. That is exactly what the University of New Orleans has meant to my family for more than two decades.
I grew up in a working-class family where college was not guaranteed. Like many first-generation students, I knew that if I wanted a degree, I needed a school that was affordable, flexible, and connected to real career opportunities. I also needed an institution that understood students often had to work while attending classes.
At UNO, the class schedules let me balance work and school. The tuition made college feel attainable. Most importantly, I was prepared for a career and a future that may not have been within reach otherwise.
Along the way, I met another first-generation college student — my husband. We met while attending UNO, building not only our education but also the foundation for our family and future together. Now, years later, we are proud that our daughter has chosen to attend there as well.
Unlike us, she had more choices when it came to college. But even with more options available, this campus still stood out for the same reasons it did for us: strong academics, outstanding professors, hands-on learning opportunities, and incredible value for families.

One thing that has always made this university special is the faculty. Professors know their students by their names. They mentor outside the classroom. They genuinely care about helping students succeed. In an era when many universities can feel overwhelming or impersonal, I am proud that my alma mater continues to offer a close-knit environment where students are seen, heard, and supported.
Today’s students also have opportunities we could only dream about when we were undergraduates. Students can assist in research, and experiential learning has expanded in exciting ways, giving students hands-on experience through research, internships, and campus-based projects.
The campus itself is also evolving into a living laboratory, where students engage directly with sustainability, coastal issues, engineering, business innovation, and other applied learning experiences that prepare them for life after graduation.
Another major advantage is The LSU New Orleans Research and Technology Park, located next to campus. Many of the companies and organizations there hire students for internships and jobs, creating a direct bridge between the classroom and the workforce. For families, that matters. We want our children to graduate not only with degrees but with experience, confidence, and opportunity.
And now, the institution is entering an extremely exciting new chapter.
When my husband and I attended UNO, it was part of the LSU System. As it transitions back into the LSU family and becomes LSU New Orleans, students will benefit from even greater collaboration opportunities with LSU Health Sciences Center, LSU Online, and other LSU campuses and programs.
That future is exciting because it combines the best of both worlds: the accessibility, community, and student-centered experience that have always defined the university, along with the expanded opportunities and recognition that come with the LSU name.
For our family, this school has never been “just” a university. It has been a place of opportunity, connection, growth, and transformation across generations. It gave two first-generation students a chance to build successful lives. And now it is helping prepare the next generation of our family for her future as well. That is why I will always believe LSU New Orleans is one of the best choices a family in our region can make.
