Where to Get the Best King Cakes on the Northshore
I’m a BIG fan of king cake. I’m old enough to fondly remember the gigantic McKenzie’s king cakes with the clown-head toothpicks and cherries on top that we’d bring to school for “King Cake Fridays.” I grew up on the Southshore, spoiled by a dad who’d brave long lines and often inclement weather to bring us a certain famous king cake. My high school boyfriend also worked at that bakery, so I was lucky enough to have a few heart-shaped king cakes made special just for me. As an adult, I spent more than a quarter of my life living less than a half mile from the original location of The King Cake Hub and expanded my tastes. My wedding anniversary is on King’s Day (January 6th), and at my reception, I served king cake to my guests to really give them a taste of New Orleans. (Don’t worry, wedding cake purists, I had a traditional cake, too!) And I have authored no less than four king cake recipes on this website – with a lineup of boozy King Cake Rum Cream cocktail recipes for good measure.
So hear me when I say this: Life’s too short to eat mediocre king cake.
Since I moved to the Northshore a few years ago, I have been a little lost as to where I could find the best king cakes. I know there is a branch of the legendary king cake dynasty over here, but I wanted to also experience the Northshore’s own famous king cakes. So I’ve created this guide to help you on your journey to find your next favorite king cake here on the Northshore, whether it started over here or elsewhere.
I crowdsourced a lot of this information through social media, but I also included information from those bakeries’ websites and social media accounts where I could. All the information is as up-to-date as I could find at the original publication of this list.
The Most King Cake Varieties Under One Roof
I’m starting this list off with Acquistapace’s, whose website touts them as being “The Northshore’s King Cake Headquarters.” I personally have purchased the vast majority of my king cakes from their Covington location since I’m in that area almost daily. As of this writing, they offer FIFTEEN local bakeries’ offerings, many of which have multiple king cake varieties available on-site. The list includes: Butter Krisp Diner, Brennan’s, Caluda’s, Cannata’s, EatFit, Gambino’s, Haydel’s, Hubig’s (a newcomer on the king cake scene this year!), Joe’s Café, Lucy Lee’s Confectionery, The Mad Batter, Marguerite’s, Nonna Randazzo’s, Sugar Love, and White House (whose small gluten-free/vegan king cakes can be purchased frozen or thawed).

Manny Randazzo’s
Fleurty Girl locations will once again be selling Manny Randazzo’s King Cakes (traditional only) on a first-come, first-served basis (no holds). They sell out FAST, and it is 1 king cake per customer. The king cakes come that day & time only, not every day. Here is the schedule for the locations:
