Our Favorite Hidden Gem Parade for Kids and Families
If there’s one thing most New Orleanians have, it’s strong opinions about Mardi Gras parades. Everyone has their favorites, the ones they swear by, and the parades they plan their entire season around. For some families, that’s every parade. For others, it’s only the big parades. And for some families, it’s their one tried-and-true parade that never changes.
As we know, most of these parades roll along the historic Uptown route. That’s where you find the big ones and all the stressful fun that comes with them. The street closures, parking woes, and crowds.
But there are also hidden-gem parades that roll outside the typical routes. I’m here to suggest adding one of those to your list. One in particular has quietly become a favorite for my family year after year: the Krewe of Nefertiti, better known as the New Orleans East parade.

It almost feels like I’m letting you in on a secret. My kids and I go every year, and it has become our official kickoff to Mardi Gras season.
The Krewe of Nefertiti was founded in 2018 and is an all-female organization that prioritizes year-round service along with their Mardi Gras fun. Let me tell you why I love this parade and why you should give it a try.
Getting There is Easy

One of the biggest reasons we love this parade is how simple it is to attend. It doesn’t require any complicated logistics plan and no hours of planning where to stand or endless road closures. Parking has always been easy for us, and we have never had to walk more than two or three blocks. With kids, snacks, chairs, and everything else, that matters a lot.
Smaller Crowds

This is a well-attended parade, but it isn’t packed, elbow to elbow. Everyone can actually see. Every year my kids get a real front row seat without adults blocking their view or fighting for space. It feels calm, relaxed and truly family-oriented.
They Throw!
We all know that some parade riders just seem to throw more than others. And if you are parading with kids, you know this is important. These ladies throw at this parade and they throw well. The riders are engaged and paying attention and my kids never leave empty handed.

The Energy and Atmosphere
There are tons of bands and marching units in this parade. From powerhouse high schools to the Pussyfooters, everyone who brings the energy is here. This parade reminds me of attending parades as a kid and really falling in love with Mardi Gras. It feels exciting without being exhausting. Everyone attending feels welcoming and neighborly.

An Easy Start to the Season
For us, this parade is our kickoff. It is a great daytime parade that gets your family in the Mardi Gras mood and sets the tone for the weeks ahead. Once we go to Nefertiti, we are officially in parade mode and pretty much go nonstop from there.

Put it on your calendar!
This year, the Krewe of Nefertiti rolls on Sunday, February 1 at 1:00 PM. If you are looking for a family-friendly parade, an easy start to the season, something less hectic and just something different, this one is worth your time.
