My children have tons of energy and love to be on the go. Thankfully we live in a city where there is always something go on, some festival to attend. We also have our regular staples we like to do that are totally free.
Throw rocks in the lake at Bonnabel Boat Launch
We love and visit basically every playground in the Greater New Orleans area. But sometimes my kids crave an outdoor activity that isn’t just a playground. We are huge fans of Bonnabel Boat Launch. While they do have an awesome partially covered playground, my kids’ favorite activity to do there is to throw rocks into the lake. They honestly could (and have) do this for hours. They will take the occasional break to run up and down the grass covered hills or throw the football around, but then they’re back to rock throwing. They enjoy watching the boats and we also enjoy spying ducks and fish sometimes.
We live very close to the East Bank Regional Library. But we have visited many of the other Jefferson and Orleans Parish branches. They are truly wonderful places. There are almost daily activities from story time, music time and my kids personal favorite is weekend crafts. They absolutely love going to the library to craft hour. It gets us out of the house on Saturday mornings and doing something. We usually check out a few books afterwards. In addition to all of these activities they have awesome summer programming. Visits from magicians, musesians, and the Zoomobile just to name a few.
Barataria Preserve at Jean Lafitte National Historical Park
My kids love exploring the swamps and wetlands. We have seen owls, snakes, alligators and tons of other critters just out and about. Kids can become official junior park rangers, complete with their own ranger badge (a huge hit with my group). The boardwalk trails are awesome to get us out in nature but stay mud free and allow for baby sister to sit in the stroller still. Every time we’ve been it’s been a completely different experience and we see new and different things.
Audubon Nature Center
This is another outdoor favorite. We recently visited the newly reopened Audubon Nature Center for the first time and it was great. We loved exploring outdoors and the indoor Interpretive Center was awesome. There were rangers on hand chatting about different animals and their habitats. There is also an awesome planetarium there, while this is the only not free area it was totally worth it for us. We watched a film called One World, One Sky (Big Bird’s Adventure) and it was very much enjoyed by the whole family.
