Nursery Rhymes for Summer Time

Hello, fellow summer parents. We are only a couple of weeks into summer vacation, and I, for one, am already feeling the burn out! Enjoy these little tongue-in-cheek rhymes I’ve put together for the sake of some silly summer laughs.

Ode to the Endless Summer Hunger

To the tune of “If You’re Happy and You Know It”

If you’re hungry and you know it, ask for snacks!
If you’re hungry and you know it, ask for snacks!
Sure, you didn’t eat a crumb
Of the lunch you just came from
If you’re hungry and you know it, ask for snacks!

If you just ate a bag of goldfish, ask for more!
If you just ate a bag of goldfish, ask for more!
If you plead and cry and whine
Mom gives in half of the time
If you just ate a bag of goldfish, ask for more!

If Mom peels bananas wrong, make sure to scream!
If Mom peels bananas wrong, make sure to scream!
You may have told her how to do it
But you’re a toddler, so screw it
If Mom peels bananas wrong, make sure to scream!

If you don’t like what’s for dinner, don’t touch it!
If you don’t like what’s for dinner, don’t touch it!
Claim you’re full but but then be sure
To ask for snacks and more and more
If you don’t like what’s for dinner, don’t touch it!

Ode to Sunburn Prevention

To the tune of “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star”

Burning, burning, white hot sun
Beating down on everyone
This Mommy’s the sunscreen queen
Not more, Mom! Don’t be so mean!
Reapplying every hour…
Staving off the sun’s red power

Ode to Screen Time Defeat

To the tune of “Row, Row, Row Your Boat”

Watch, watch, watch TV
Watch it all day long!
Mommy missed the camp deadline
So YouTube’s going strong

No, no, no limit
Screen time’s a free-for-all
One day we’ll get back our routine
But for now we’ve hit a wall

Play, play, play the Switch
Try not to feel the shame…
Tomorrow we’ll try outside time
But today, we’ll play this game!

Ode to Summer at its Finest

May you and your children savor summer as it’s meant to be!

Roses are red
Violets are blue
The kids are outside
But don’t know what to do

Camellias are pink
Gardenias are white
There’s bubbles and chalk
There’s the bike and the kite

Mud pies are brown
Fresh grass is green
The more that they play
The better it seems

Joy is a rainbow
Playtime is a blast
If only these summers
Could somehow please last

Erica Tran
Erica lives in Kenner with her husband Michael and her three sons, Benjamin, Joshua, and Elijah. After graduating from UL Lafayette with a degree in advertising and landing her dream job, she left her chosen field and now works part time as an administrative assistant for a Catholic retreat movement. She spends the rest of her time at home with her boys, finding lost toys and actively ignoring various messes. In 2019, she self-published her first book, The Sister. There's not a lot of free time between working, reading and writing, and chasing her kids, but in those moments she's usually sprawled on the sofa in casual denial about just how messy her house is.
