A Sweet Return: The Donut Hole Reclaims Its Place in LaPlace

With National Donut Day right around the corner—mark your calendars for June 6th—what better excuse to indulge in a local classic? Every town has that one beloved spot—the place that instantly brings a flood of nostalgia, warmth, and a deep sense of belonging. It’s the backdrop to childhood memories, milestone celebrations, and simple everyday joys. For the people of LaPlace, Louisiana, that cherished place was The Donut Hole.

For three decades, The Donut Hole served up more than just delicious pastries—it dished out a sense of community. Its hot glazed donuts and savory kolaches became morning rituals and weekend staples. Generations of locals grew up with powdered sugar on their fingers and jelly-filled smiles. Sadly, like so many cherished institutions along the Gulf Coast, The Donut Hole was devastated by Hurricane Ida. The original owners relocated, and for three years, the beloved bakery sat silent.

But LaPlace didn’t forget. And thankfully, neither did Courtney and Bret Bahr.

When the original owners put the bakery up for sale, the Bahrs saw more than just a business opportunity—they saw a chance to restore a piece of the community’s heart. Parents of four young children, the Bahrs knew the road ahead wouldn’t be easy. Starting a business is no small feat, let alone while wrangling a small army of kids. But for them, reviving The Donut Hole was about more than donuts—it was about legacy, family, and teaching their children the values of hard work and perseverance.

In fact, the Bahrs turned the reopening of The Donut Hole into a family affair, infusing the space with their values and a generous scoop of creativity. The bakery is still turning out those famous hot glazed donuts and hearty kolaches, but it now also boasts whimsical, family-friendly features that make it a sweet adventure for little ones. A delightful example? DIY donut kits that allow kids to decorate their own tasty creations. And once their masterpieces are complete, there’s even a cheerful photo wall where budding bakers can snap a pic with their sugary handiwork. And parents? They’re covered too—with an entire wall of customizable coffee creations, hot or iced, flavored or bold, whatever fuels your early morning donut run.

The Bahrs have managed to do something rare: they’ve revived a local treasure while adding a new layer of charm that invites the next generation to make memories of their own. The Donut Hole isn’t just back—it’s better than ever, blending tradition with a fresh twist of family-friendly fun.

So, if you’re craving a warm, sticky-glazed slice of nostalgia—or just need a fun way to kickstart your morning with the kids—make your way to The Donut Hole, located at 407 E Airline Hwy, LaPlace, LA 70068. They’re open bright and early from 4:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., Tuesday through Sunday. Whether you’re a lifelong fan or a first-time visitor, you’re in for a treat—literally and figuratively.
