In honor of National Donut Day, we went in search of our kids’ favorite donuts! Obviously, they were beyond thrilled and all too willing to participate in this project.
After trying places from Kenner to Uptown to the Northshore and everywhere in between, we found that one particular kind of donut stood out amongst the kids, no matter the location. We also learned that it can be quite difficult to get a little one to sit still when they get a donut!

It’s safe to say there is no such thing as a bad donut around here! And there was obviously one clear favorite – chocolate with sprinkles. I have to say, even as a thirtysomething, I am inclined to agree!! While I do enjoy fun and fancy donuts from time to time, my all time favorite continues to be chocolate with sprinkles. But they have to be the “good” sprinkles aka nonpareils. “Jimmies” sprinkles are just not the same. Our kids surely enjoyed doing the “research” for this National Donut Day project, and we may have indulged a little ourselves! To celebrate National Donut Day, a few local places are offering great deals, including FREE donuts!
Oh Myndee, it appears you have never been to George’s Donut Shop on Robert Rd. in Slidell. Otherwise, it would have absolutely made your list. I remember when George had a shop on Chef Hwy in New Orleans East about 30 years ago. He later moved to Slidell and is still operating today. You’ll find the most amazing, melt in your mouth, hot donuts there. It is a complete dive but his patrons wouldn’t have it any other way. Everyone needs to check it out! If you haven’t tasted George’s Donuts, you haven’t lived.
Oh my, that sounds delicious, Sandy! We have not tried George’s donuts, but we surely will now!!
You’ll be so happy you did and you’ll be supporting a local small business. I ate his donuts when I was a kid and have been bringing my kids there whenever we are in town. Enjoy!
