Blueberry Picking: 5 Things to Know Before You Go

Blueberry season is in full swing. If you haven’t been blueberry picking yet, this is your year to go. It is the perfect outing for families. While there are many farms to choose from in Louisiana, our family’s favorite is Ridemore Farm. Located an hour from Metairie, Ridemore offers more than just picking blueberries. Here are five things you should know before heading to the farm.
Online reservations
Ridemore accepts reservations (up to six people per reservation) online starting at the end of May through June on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 8 am – 11 am. The exact dates change each year based on crops, weather, etc. Sign up for their newsletter in order to stay up-to-date on when reservations open. Click here for the website.
Arrive Early
The earlier you get there, the better in terms of what you pick. They recommend getting there a little bit before 8 a.m. to get your bucket and to be able to pick blackberries if they are ripe and ready to go. We were early enough to snatch up some fresh farm eggs.
Free admission

There is free admission to the farm. They have buckets available for you, and they charge by the pound for what you pick. Bring a hat, sunscreen, and water as it is very sunny. Bug spray is a must, too. You can also bring snacks or food, as there are a few picnic tables available.
Vegetables to Pick
There are usually vegetables that are available to pick in addition to the berries. Last year we were able to pick fresh corn. Per their website, they do not use sprays on the berries or vegetables.
Animals on the Farm
There are plenty of beautiful horses available for petting and feeding. We were able to pet the chickens and goats too. After picking, we grabbed some treats for the horses and enjoyed walking around the farm, visiting with the animals.
Blueberry picking has become one of our favorite summertime activities. It is relaxing and a great way to experience farm life, only an hour outside of Metairie. Before heading out, check the farm’s website for the latest updates, as weather and crop availability can affect hours, activities, and what’s available for picking.
