Summer Camp Bingo: A New Orleans Mom Edition

Summer camp season is in full swing in New Orleans, which means moms across the city are waking up before sunrise, searching for missing water bottles, and wondering why camp seems to require more supplies than a week-long vacation.

Whether your child is attending one camp or a different camp every week until August, there are certain experiences that unite us all.

Welcome to Summer Camp Bingo: New Orleans Mom Edition!

SUMMER CAMP BINGO

A Few Things We Can All Agree On

The water bottle situation is out of control.
You buy the expensive insulated one. You label it. You add stickers. You remind your child not to lose it. Three days later, it’s gone forever, and we’re back at the store looking for a new one, and the process repeats.

Camp emails arrive at the most convenient times.
Nothing gets your heart rate up quite like opening an email at 9:45 p.m. informing you that tomorrow is Hawaiian Shirt Day, Crazy Sock Day, and Bring Your Favorite Stuffed Animal Day. And when you ask your sweet, sweet child, they say, “Oh yeah! I heard something about that!”

The artwork is always a surprise.
Your child proudly hands you a construction paper masterpiece. You smile like the great parent that you are and say, “Wow! Tell me about it!” Because honestly, you have absolutely no idea what you’re looking at.

Pickup time is a social event.
Half the parents are sitting in the carpool line scrolling their phones. The other half are trying to remember which camp their child is attending this week. Sometimes both groups are the same people, and that’s okay because, as Zac and Vanessa said in High School Musical, “We’re all in this together!” (I bet you sang that!)

The Real Prize

While we joke about forgotten lunches, lost towels, and endless camp forms, there’s something special about summer camp season. It’s the friendships formed over popsicles and playground games. It’s the confidence kids build trying something new. It’s the stories they tell on the ride home while they are covered in paint, glitter, or dirt. And it’s knowing that one day we’ll actually miss these chaotic summers. For now, we’ll settle for finding the missing water bottle. Again.
