Tammany Taste of Summer :: The Northshore’s Restaurant Month

Tammany Taste of Summer

Tammany Taste of Summer :: The Northshore’s Restaurant Month

It used to be that you had to go into “the city” for a celebratory culinary experience. When I grew up, to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, any life milestones, you had to head into New Orleans, a city known for its excellent food and dining. But now, all of that is here on the Northshore. The last ten years has seen an explosion of the dining scene, especially in areas like historic downtown Covington and Olde Towne Slidell. Where just within a few blocks you can find an overwhelming (in a good way) amount of choices whether you want to pick up something quick without skimping on quality, or want to dress up and enjoy the atmosphere. The Northshore is also a family-centric place, meaning there’s tons of restaurants that keep the kids experience in mind, too.

What and When is Tammany Taste of Summer

Think the Northshore’s “restaurant week” but on steroids. They host it for an entire month that they call “Tammany Taste of Summer” where restaurants in Mandeville, Covington, Madisonville, Slidell, and even the lesser known towns like Folsom, highlight special menus and discounts. Tammany Taste of Summer takes place August 1-31, 2025, and this year marks EIGHT years of the event.

New Restaurants on the Northshore

Tammany Taste of Summer is the perfect time to try a new restaurant on the Northshore that you have been eying. These menus usually give you a great taste of what that chef is all about and always leave you wanting more. The newest restaurant participating in Tammany Taste is Pablo’s – A South American Taste. Located on the popular Front Street in Slidell, Pablo’s is a new Peruvian spot, bringing Lima’s incredible flavors to the Northshore. Think fresh, zesty ceviche and savory lomo saltado in a colorful atmosphere that feels like stepping into a Lima street market (but with high chairs and AC!)

My Tammany Taste of Summer Picks

As someone who has lived here for ten years, practically used to eat for a living, and never runs out of new places to try on The Northshore, I still sometimes find myself going back to old favorites. Especially when they have new tasty dishes on their Tammany Taste menu that catch my attention. Some of my tried and true restaurants on The Northshore participating in Tammany Taste of Summer this year are:

Tavi – You’re spoiled for choice in downtown Covington when it comes to dining, but Tavi is one of those places that I think I’d cry if they ever closed. The sister restaurant to the infamous Shaya across the lake, Tavi is a true celebration of Lebanese and Israeli food. Try one of their multiple hummus offerings even if it’s not on their Tammany Taste Menu (I promise all – especially their Fried Chicken Hummus- are SO worth it)

Tchefuncte’s – Sweeping scenery around the most beautiful bend of the Tchefuncte River and watching the boats come and go under the traditional draw bridge make this restaurant on Water Street in Madisonville one of the best views on the Northshore. It’s one of the nicer and pricer options, which is why one of the best times to dine is when there is a  discounted pre-fixed menu.

Liz’s Where Y’at Diner – You won’t meet a friendlier face on The Northshore than owner Liz Munson, I’m still thinking about their 2024 special of BBQ Shrimp and Grits Toast and can’t wait to see what he comes up with for this year.

Palmettos on The Bayou – This will always be my choice for ambiance alone (though the food never disappoints) There’s something about dining on a deck over the bayou with candlelight and fresh cut flowers that make me fall in love with Louisiana all over again each time.

English Tea Room – Pinkies up, people. This quaint and decorative tea house on the Northshore is an experience in itself. It’s one of the top places to visit and you’ll see why. Don your best British accent and fascinators, take pictures with the traditional English telephone booth and Queen Elizabeth cut out. Great for a girls brunch or even tea party with your daughters (though i’d wait until at least age 5+ due to the dainty china and glassware). ** Reservations required

La Carreta Hear me out. You know them, you love them. But La Carreta makes this list because with kids, absolutely nothing beats the speed of Mexican food when you’re trying to feed hungry, impatient little gremlins. Especially when you can have a fresh strawberry marg as you wait. And it’s nice knowing that Tammany Taste also offers fast, quick and kid-friendly options for dining at a discount.

So there you have it, make plans to try some new restaurants on the Northshore this August. Or spend a weekend at one of the bed and breakfasts they’re known for and try a couple restaurants this Tammany Taste of Summer on the Northshore.
