Hidden Gem in New Orleans :: Spitfire Coffee

Hidden Gem in New Orleans :: Spitfire Coffee

I get it. We all have “our” coffee place, and the idea of straying from your tried and true daily brew may fill you with literal dread. What if I switch and this one is too strong? Or not strong enough? Too sweet? Too light? Not to be dramatic – but that will literally ruin my day. So I do not take the responsibility of suggesting a coffee shop lightly. And I am here to assure you that starting your day at Spitfire Coffee is a guaranteed beautiful morning.

Spitfire Coffee is located on Exchange Place in the French Quarter right across from the Pelican Club (a Quarter favorite post for another day). You are almost guaranteed to be greeted by the owner who will happily and enthusiastically talk you through all of the current options. The man’s knowledge is incredible, and he will meticulously make your beverage from start to finish with care and precision.

While my husband always opts for a fresh pour over, I tend to drift toward the list of current specials. The smoked iced mocha is not only beautifully balanced (not too sweet, not too dark) but it was also expertly brewed. As someone who can be sensitive to caffeine I have yet to have an experience at Spitfire where the second half of my day was clouded over by the dreaded caffeine crash. Next, the tres fleurs iced latte is such an unexpected flavor combination that I would have never expected to pair well with coffee. With hints of blossoms and orange, topped with lovely little flowers, this little treat brightened my morning in more ways than one.

Speaking of little treats, Spitfire partners with the Buttery Beaver for their pastry offerings which are ::chefs kiss:: Never had an ube Kouign Amann? Yea, I hadn’t either. But trust me, you should.

The owner, Scott, has a little one of his own, and he takes special care to make sure our 2 year-old feels included. He always offers our son a vanilla steamed milk, finished at a tepid lukewarm temperature in the perfect little cup. And let me tell you, that vanilla milk hits. I’ve finished off more than one over the last few months.

Next time you are in the Quarter, especially with the kiddos, I highly recommend seeking out this gem and supporting a lovely locally-owned business.
