Last Tuesday, while most metro area schools were canceled in anticipation of Hurricane Sally, a fire started in an annex building of JC Ellis Elementary School in Metairie. No one was in the building and Jefferson Parish Fire Department firefighters and first responders were able to get the fire under control relatively quickly. However, the building was heavily damaged by fire, smoke, and water from the firefighting efforts. 
Twelve faculty and staff members lost the contents of their classrooms. Insurance will likely cover replacement of things like computers, overhead projectors, and other big ticket items. But as many people know, public school teachers often purchase classroom supplies and decorations with their own funds. They put their hearts, their creativity, and free time into making their classrooms a safe and fun learning environment for the students.
Many of our readers have reached out to ask how they can help. The fact that so many of you reached out that we put together a post speaks volumes to the generosity of the New Orleans Mom Community. We know that things are tight for many people during these times, and yet the overwhelming offers of love are still there. Mr. Rogers said to look for the helpers in times of uncertainty. You, dear readers, continue to be helpers.
