Local Digital Resources for Kids During COVID-19

Since we’re all staying home looking for things to keep us all occupied, here is a list of local businesses we can show some love to in the process.

Audubon Zoo Virtual Community Connection :: Even though Audubon Zoo is closed, we’re going to try our best to bring the Zoo to you! Check out our Facebook Live series to learn more about the animals we all know and love!

Challenge Island :: Now, kids can experience the magic of Challenge Island®, the world’s #1 STEAM program, from the safety and comfort of home. Every Home Island lesson features our award-winning, groundbreaking curriculum and taught live by certified Challenge Island® teachers.  Since Challenge Island® is powered exclusively by kids’ imaginations, you’ll only need a computer and a few common household items to embark on your engineering adventure.  Whether you homeschool or your school is temporarily closed, Home Island® is a convenient and exciting way to enrich your studies through hands-on, cross-curricular STEAM education. We also offer virtual birthday parties, girl scout badge workshops, and enrichment classes!

Infinity Science Center :: Need help while kids are at home with you? We are going to be posting educational videos, activities, and content for you and your kids to continue STEM learning during the social distancing time. EVERYDAY!

Jefferson Parish Library :: Library administrators and Parish leaders have come together to make it easier than ever to access the Library’s Digital Content collection. This includes eBooks, AudioBooks, music, and movies you can download to your phone or tablet. Additionally, there is access to magazines, comics, and much more!

Kendra Scott Coloring Sheets :: We encourage you to download our coloring sheets below, complete them with friends or family, hang them up, and then maybe even design some of your new custom creations at the Color Bar™ online! After all, what would lift spirits more than a yellow box on your front doorstep? We’re thinking of all of you during this time and are sending virtual hugs and some sunshine to wherever you may be.

Kindermusik :: You can join ANY online class over the course of the school closure, as long as your child is in the right age range for it. Upon enrollment you will receive an email with a link to our online classroom and the online class schedule. The cost is $85 (our normal once a week price) for UNLIMITED online Kindermusik classes during the school closures!

Louisiana 4-H’s Virtual Recess:: Daily activities and challenges to keep kids’ minds and body active.

Louisiana Public Broadcasting At-Home Learning :: In an effort to ensure limited disruption to Louisiana students’ education due to public school closures, Louisiana Public Broadcasting (LPB) in partnership with the Louisiana Department of Education and in collaboration with PBS stations nationwide have announced a plan to provide teachers, parents, caregivers, and students with resources to continue learning at home.

Louisiana State Museum Online Education:: See lesson plans focused on our exhibition “From ‘Dirty Shirts’ to Buccaneers: The Battle of New Orleans in American Culture” and more. Additional activities will be added soon. When we reopen, bring your whole class on a free field trip to see the exhibitions in person!

National World War II Museum :: Our WWII Media and Education Center is answering questions and providing critical support to students, teachers, and parents through an email hotline, along with an Online Teacher Resources digital library linking to curriculum guides, webinars, Electronic Field Trips, hands-on activities, and more. Last week alone, our Museum educators engaged more than 250 classrooms and nearly 6,000 students from early childhood through high school via Microsoft FlipGrid, and those efforts are just beginning.

New Orleans Culinary and Hospitality Institute Cooking in Quarantine :: Now more than ever, food can be a source of comfort and community. We’ve kicked off Cooking in Quarantine, an office-hours-meets-supper-club hosted every Tuesday and Thursday by chefs at the New Orleans Culinary and Hospitality Institute (join from anywhere in the world!). Register at www.nochi.org/shop (and leave us a comment if there’s a recipe or technique you’d like to see covered!).

Sarah Clostio Artistry Coloring Pages :: There isn’t much I feel like I can do right now with the growing panic, but I CAN provide your kids with a few FREE printable coloring pages I drew a while back. These are all Louisiana themed and easily accessed through my site. If you or your kids do color them, please share them with me or tag me in them!! I’d love to see how you use them!

South Louisiana Wetlands Discovery Center :: To help with all of the students at home, we will be sharing fun games, activities, and links so that kids can continue to learn and explore while at home! Check out our page on Monday for a new activity!!
