When, Where, and How Do You Have Fun?
When was the last time you had fun? Before you answer that, we should define fun to ensure we’re discussing the same concept.
Fun is the experience of joy, enjoyment, or amusement that energizes and uplifts us. It often involves activities or moments that bring pleasure, make us laugh, spark curiosity, or create a sense of connection with others or ourselves. Fun can be simple or elaborate, shared or solitary, but it always carries a sense of lightness and freedom—an escape from routine or pressure.
At its core, fun is about being present, letting go of self-consciousness, and embracing what feels good in the moment, whether through creativity, adventure, relaxation, or play. It’s a reminder to celebrate life, find joy in the ordinary, and prioritize the things that bring us happiness.
Now that it’s been defined, when was the last time you experienced it? Is it a regular occurrence for you?
Life can be a whirlwind of responsibilities, deadlines, and endless to-do lists, leaving little room for joy and connection. But I’ve learned that fun doesn’t magically happen when everything else is done—it’s something we make time for.
So, when do I have fun? Whenever I decide it’s time. Fun doesn’t always require hours of planning or the perfect setting. It might be an impromptu call with an old friend or a quick escape to a favorite coffee shop for some “me time.” Some of my favorite moments of fun happen unexpectedly, like when a family game night turns into belly laughs over inside jokes or a spontaneous walk around the neighborhood becomes a chance to connect with nature, neighbors, and loved ones. While spontaneous moments are essential, so is intentionality. From cocktail parties and date nights to membership organizations and book clubs, I schedule fun, too.
Where do I have fun? Honestly, anywhere. Fun happens at the park when my family comes together to volunteer, at home while watching my kids interact with each other, or even during a road trip when we let loose with car karaoke. My idea of fun has evolved over time. While I still enjoy special outings, I’ve come to cherish the joy found in ordinary places—moments that remind me that it’s not the location but the people and mindset that matter most.
And how do I have fun? By being fully present and embracing the moment. It’s easy to get caught up in worrying about schedules or trying to make things perfect, but letting go of those expectations allows real fun to unfold. I find joy in being playful, curious, and open to new experiences. It’s about tapping into what makes me feel alive—whether that’s creating something new, exploring a new skill, or enjoying heartfelt conversations with people I love.
Fun is a vital part of life, not an extra. It rejuvenates us, strengthens our connections with others, and reminds us of the beauty in the everyday. When, where, and how we have fun says so much about our priorities and how we choose to show up in the world.
So, I challenge you to reflect on your own fun. What brings you joy? When do you make space for it? Where do you feel the most free to laugh, explore, and connect? Don’t wait for the “perfect” time. Start today—because life is too short to miss out on the moments that make your soul smile.
