Three Habits I’m Taking into the New Year

Three Habits I’m Taking into the New Year

When thinking about habits in the New Year, things can quickly become both overwhelming and discouraging, especially with social media in our faces with the many ideas and ways we can “improve” ourselves. Of course, there are things I want to improve, but I also like taking time to acknowledge the ways I am already pursuing wellbeing and habits that I have under my belt and want to carry into the New Year.

Three of my current habits stick out as ones that will come with me into 2025:

A daily walk

Morning walks are magical. The early morning weather in New Orleans is usually nice from October to June. And even in the summer, if you’re up early, it’s bearable. I’ve been taking morning walks for about a year and a half, and I can honestly say this is the habit that has offered me the most peace and mental wellness. As a stay-at-home mom who homeschools, I don’t have a lot of time to myself. So, I depend on the 45-60 minutes in the morning when I can move my body and be alone. On my walks, I typically start with 10-15 minutes of silence, to give my brain space. Often worries will rise up, but I try to give them to the Holy Spirit and move on. Then I listen to Lectio 365 which is a free, guided prayer app. I love centering myself in prayer as the day begins. Lastly, I’ll listen to a nonfiction audiobook – this is usually something regarding spiritual growth or parenting. Before I began this habit, I never considered myself to be a morning person, but now my body craves the movement. It’s a habit that keeps me grounded and brings a lot of peace.

A daily green smoothie

One of my goals for 2024 was to lose some weight, and I did this by really focusing on my nutrition. One of my main nutrition accomplishments is that most days I drink a green smoothie for either breakfast or lunch. A green smoothie helps me get vegetables in, helps decrease bloating, and honestly tastes amazing.

Here’s my recipe: a large handful of spinach, frozen banana, frozen mango, a scoop of protein powder (I like Be Well By Kelly Vegan protein powder) or a scoop of collagen peptides, a scoop of pb2, and coconut water or almond milk. I blend it together and it’s a delicious meal that helps keep me on track with my nutrition goals.

Social Media Time Limits

Did you know you can set social media time limits on your phone? I’ve done this for a while, but this year my husband and I took it to the next level by having the other person set the password. So, anytime I’ve reached my social media (or any app that I’ve set limits on), I have to ask my husband for the password and vice versa! It’s awesome. We aren’t jerks about it and will give the password easily, but just having to ask for it when you know you’ve reached your limit is enough to choose to do something else instead. This has helped me read more, be more present in my life, and spend way less time scrolling.

2025 is upon us and whether you’re excited about it or already worried about it, setting a few simple daily habits can really be a game changer. Remember, life is best approached by being present and taking things day by day. Before setting goals for next year, take stock of what you’re already doing and want to continue. I bet you have some great habits already in place! If you do, I’d love to know what they are!

Happy New Year!
