Mom, Thank You

Mom, Thank You

A mother and daughter relationship has a different definition for different people. Some women have a terrible relationship with their mothers. I did not. I have always been blessed to have an amazing relationship with my mom. Maybe it was because I was an only child. Maybe it is because I knew she had a tumultuous relationship with her mother and how different my mom was from my grandmother. Whatever it was, it has always been a loving relationship. From amazing memories as a child to fun travels as a teenager, to maybe not always wanted (but definitely much needed) advice as a young adult. I hope I always said thank you. I know I have a lot as an adult. Nothing prepared me for the immense intensified gratefulness for my own mother until I became a mom myself.

Thank you for giving birth to me. I know it changed your body. I know it was difficult. Thank you. Thank you for not giving up on having me. Thank you for braving infertility, with multiple miscarriages, when it was not a very known or discussed topic. Thank you for being honest with me about it. I cannot imagine how heartbreaking it must have been. How brave you were for continuing to try.

Thank you for always encouraging me. For telling me I was beautiful when bullies made me feel ugly. Thank you for telling me it would get better because you were right, it did. Thank you for telling me that I could be anything I set my mind to. For telling me that your family came to this country for better opportunities. I always wanted to be a doctor, and because of your encouragement, I am.

Thank you for telling me I would find my true love, my Prince Charming. After every heartbreak, you said he was still out there. He was. Thank you.

Thank you for loving me. For worrying about me. For taking care of me. For the sleepless nights. The tired days. For the times you cried but put on a happy face. I now understand everything you did that you didn’t show me.

Thank you for making me the mom that I am today. Thank you for showing me how it’s done. Motherhood. It’s a hard job but as you told me when I got pregnant, it is so worth it. Thank you for encouraging me during those first few months of motherhood. When I cried because I was not sure what I was doing. Was I doing it correctly? Motherhood. You said I was, and I believed you. Thank you for getting up with me those first few weeks in the middle of the night. When I was exhausted, you were my cheerleader. Thank you for being the most incredible Grandmother. I love watching this next chapter in your life.

I know most people say it’s a thankless job, being a Mom. I disagree. You just may have to wait a bit for the thank you. So, Mom, if I haven’t said it enough, THANK YOU.
