Hangout in Hammond at Blackened Brew Gastropub and Deadbeat Brewery
My family and I moved to the Northshore in May of 2020, so for the majority of our first two years on the Northshore, we were not able to explore and fully experience all that it had to offer. We love discovering new restaurants, breweries, and coffee shops, and despite what others had told us, we were pleased to discover that the Northshore has a lot to offer, including Croissant, The Greyhound, Batter, and Gnarley Barley’s Dine-Gnar. We started making a list of places we wanted to check out, and slowly but surely started visiting them as our budget and babysitter availability allowed.
One of the places we had originally included on our list was Blackened Brew, but one day, while wandering around downtown Hammond, we discovered the restaurant had closed. We were disappointed but didn’t research it much. Luckily, they weren’t closed for good, they were just moving to a new location! Last fall, the new and improved Blackened Brew opened on West Club Deluxe Road. The new location includes a much larger restaurant, with indoor and water-front outdoor dining. The restaurant also includes a shared courtyard with the new Deadbeat Brewery.
This duo has so much to offer, it’s hard to decide where to start.
Blackened Brew’s indoor dining rooms are beautiful, and their outdoor patio sits right over the water of the small pond. Their food is absolutely delicious, and each time we’ve gone, I’ve had trouble deciding what to get. So far, my favorite menu item is the Salmon Salad, and my husband is a big fan of the Whisky Tango Foxtrot (WTF) Burger. The Loaded Breakfast Sweet Potato Fries are drool-worthy. We also really enjoy the Brussels starter and have agreed that we have to try the Thirsty Pretzel the next time we go.
As the name suggests, Blackened Brew also has a great menu of beers and other beverages to choose from, or you can walk across the courtyard to their neighbor, Deadbeat Brewery. Deadbeat just opened up this past July, but they already have enjoyable and humorously themed beers on tap. My husband was excited that they had a few sours to choose from, including the Gazebo Effect blueberry sour and the Herding Ducks mango sour. I really enjoyed the Half Shirt Peach Cider. They also have ales and IPAs, and if you can’t decide, they offer flights.
Once you have your beer, you can hang out inside or chill out in the shared courtyard, playing yard games or lying back in an Adirondack chair watching the turtles in the pond. Both places are kid-friendly, and leashed dogs are allowed in the courtyard.
In addition to the great food and beverages, both businesses host a number of events. Both offer live music regularly. Deadbeat Brewery has hosted several vinyl sales and comedy shows, and they’ve even had a petting zoo. Blackened Brew regularly hosts trivia nights, steak nights, and whisky tastings.
These two businesses have created a great place to hang out and visit again and again. They are definitely worth checking out with your family or friends.
