Disney’s Live Action Mulan is a Must-See

The very much anticipated movie of the year has finally come to our screens. Yes, Disney+ streamed their new live-action movie Mulan. I may have mentioned before I’m like a Disney fanatic.  So, I know my fellow Disnerds were just as excited as I was finding out about this long-waited movie.

A family member and I share a Disney+ account, so we decide to split the cost to get the premier access to stream Mulan. I have no regrets doing it either. Yes, we paid $29.99 to watch the movie. I heard all the things, “girl I’m not paying $30 for a movie! That cost more than going to the theater itself.” Ok cool, but I must say it was well worth the money.

A Different Approach

Disney took a different route when creating the live-action version of Mulan. When I first learned that Mushu wasn’t in the movie I wasn’t as upset as most, but I was expecting to see how they would have included him in the story. But I can say that watching it, I didn’t even miss him.

Mulan is a story about a young girl who joined the Imperial army in order to keep her father (one man per family) from having to serve.

I took a lot out of this movie I want to show you my feelings about the movie.

Rich in Culture and Tradition.

Disney displayed a beautiful explanation of how the Chinese culture takes pride in tradition, honor, and respect for their ancestors and family. After discovering that Mulan left for battle, her father prayed to their ancestors to protect her. This was where Mushu would have come in to play, but I see, in respect for the culture, Disney used the Phoenix as her protector. Without any spoilers, I will say I can tell why phoenix was Mulan’s spirit guide. It had a really deep meaning at the end of the movie.

Truth Within Self

Throughout the movie, one word was mentioned so many times. Truth. Mulan had to find the truth within herself in order for her courage and strength to bloom.  She lied to her family, her troop, and general. But the whole time they saw something in her that they still trusted her after she revealed herself as a female. (it did take a second try to prove herself, but all in all, they trusted her.)

Woman Empowerment

Being that the story was based in times where women were only to serve and be married off, the live-action story of Mulan showed that it’s ok to take a stand as a woman. That woman can lead and fight alongside men. Women can be courageous, do things that men can do but maybe even better. It also showed that its ok to be different and still be yourself. We all have the potential to lead but we have to find our truth and let our Phoenix free. (You’ll get the phoenix pun once you see the movie.)

It’s so much more that I can say about how much I really enjoyed the movie, but I don’t want to spoil it. The writers and directors did a really great job in the making of this movie. I’m not a really deep type of person, but I thought this movie showed a lot of strength, courage, and pride, and they showed it in a beautiful way. I can’t see anyone really being upset or thinking that this movie wasn’t good because it wasn’t based on the original. Times have changed so I can appreciate the creativity it took to make this movie.
