A Not-So-Kodak Moment

A Not-So-Kodak Moment

The day has come! You researched and found the perfect photographer for your family photos. You chose the cutest outfits for each member of your family and picked the best location whether it be City Park or the beach. All you have to do is show up and smile for the pictures. After all, how hard could it be? We all see the camera-ready photos of families on social media.

But as you arrive at your photo shoot location, your children decide that this would be the best time to throw a tantrum. You begin to bribe them so they will show their angelic smiles to the camera but they refuse to look at the camera much less smile. Your husband who already does not want to be here suggests that you reschedule your session for another day.

Let me let you in on a little secret – you’re not alone!

Instead of being upset, make the best of the moment! Don’t give up hope! Laugh at the moment and leave the photographer to capture these silly times.

The first time we took professional photos with my family of four, my daughter decided that she was going to have a snack that would last the entire photo shoot. Below are the pictures we captured. Even though these are not the sweet smiling pictures that I had in  mind, they have become some of my favorite photos of her (even with the snacks in the photos).

Instead of getting upset and discouraged that you aren’t getting the photos that you envisioned, use the opportunity to capture your family’s true personalities. Years later, and these photos still capture McKinsey’s favorite time of day – snack time!

Some of my favorite holiday cards to display of family and friends are non-candid photos that are silly and make me laugh. I am sure most families will think the same way.

So what are you waiting for? Book the photographer and choose the outfits but do not plan the scene. Your family photos or holiday cards of your family on the beach or the streets of New Orleans are sure to be much cuter and charming with a little personality.
