Write Down Those Memories

How often do you think that you will remember something forever? You think a moment or idea is so grand that there is no way you can forget the details of it, right? Except, eventually you don’t remember. You may not forget everything, but ultimately time passes and every detail is not as vivid as it once was. My best advice to you to avoid this is to start writing things down. Write down every memory of those monumental moments in your life, those times you never want to forget anything about.

This advice was first given to me when my husband proposed years ago. While everyone else was congratulating me and asking about wedding planning, one coworker pulled me aside and gave me the same advice that I am now giving to you. She told me to write down every detail of the proposal, everything from what I wore and who was there, to how I felt and who I told first. She warned me that although I can’t imagine it, one day I won’t remember it all and I will want to.

And wow, she was right. I remember thinking “how can I EVER forget any of this?” But she was someone I trusted, so I took her advice. I wrote it all down. And now, after wedding planning, a wedding, starting a new job, regular day to day life, personal struggles, a pandemic and two kids later… I am so very thankful that I have every detail of that moment written down. I know I won’t ever forget how the proposal happened, but it’s the details I am so thankful to have noted.

How to do it?

I’m not into journaling so this doesn’t need to be anything fancy. You can jot it down in your email or a notes app on your phone, just be sure it’s something that you will always have access too. Try to think about the moments and stories you want to share with your grandkids in the future or want to re-read and reminisce about every now and then. Photos are great, but I believe nothing can compare to you documenting your own feelings in your own words.

So, please, just do it. Commit to it. Promise me that you will write down the details of your special proposal, your journey to motherhood, that scary medical situation, or anything else you think you’ll remember forever.
