Let me start by saying that I simply love pralines. There’s just something about that sweet pecan filled treat that still vividly reminds me of my own genuine childhood excitement when my Mom would bring one home for me. Needless to say, a children’s book about pralines evokes all the nostalgia for me.
Kirstie Myvett’s Praline Lady takes place in the New Orleans French Quarter and tells the story of a local praline maker and her daily quest to sell her homemade treats to residents. The story allows readers to learn from the praline lady as she creates her homemade praline treats. The so-called praline lady then journeys through the city of New Orleans to sell her delectable sweets and dreams of opening her own praline shop one day.
Shining a bright light on Black female entrepreneurs, Praline Lady shows the possibility of a hardworking woman with a dream and a goal. The best part is that it is set right here in New Orleans, so young children can easily relate to the setting and see themselves in the story. Even more importantly, young readers will be able to see themselves in the praline lady and envision all of their creative and entrepreneurial dreams coming true. Children often have big dreams, and the Praline Lady shows you that all things are possible with hard work and determination.
For the family who loves a book with a lesson, this story does a great job of utilizing words and phrases like “Vieux Carre” and “beignets” that are a staple in every New Orleans’ child’s emerging vocabulary. There is also a helpful glossary of terms included for those who might need help with our vernacular. Therefore, Praline Lady also makes a great gift for out of town friends, cousins or people who may love New Orleans like we do but not get to partake in its joy as often as residents. Package the book with pralines and voila! You’ve got the sweetest gift or care package.
Praline Lady is a great addition to any child’s bookshelf, especially for a local kiddo or a New Orleanian at heart. Consider donating one to your child’s classroom; it is authored by and features a Black entrepreneur. This is also Kirstie’s debut picture book, so by supporting her work you are also investing in one local woman’s dream. Make sure to grab a copy of Praline Lady for your little ones as soon as you can. But make sure you have a praline or praline recipe ready to enjoy while you read!
