Planet Fitness :: A Fresh New Fitness Option in Gretna
I have a confession to make. I belong to three gyms.
It’s not as crazy as it sounds. One is for classes, one is for the pool, and one is for convenience.
That last one is Planet Fitness, and let me tell you why it’s so great, and why it’s even better now.
First, it’s less than ten minutes from my house. Considering it takes five minutes just to get out of my neighborhood, getting anywhere in under ten minutes is fantastic. The Gretna location of Planet Fitness is located right by some of my most frequented places. The drugstore, the grocery, the sporting goods store, and the fabric store. Perfect!
Second, it’s super affordable. I have no guilt about spending ten bucks a month for the membership. It’s so easy to get to, I have no excuse not to go for even just half an hour after bringing the kids to the bus stop in the mornings. (I’ll admit, I still make the excuses, but I am only human.)
Third, the equipment. Not only is it plentiful but there’s a huge variety. It might sound boring to some people, but the treadmill is my favorite cardio machine. I’ve trained for entire half marathons on the treadmills at Planet Fitness. You might think there’s nothing worse than being on a treadmill for two hours, but consider that it’s air-conditioned, I can keep track of my pace, and I can watch TV…why would I want to run outside in the blistering heat? No thanks. And if I want a change of pace (pun completely intended) I can hop on my second-favorite cardio machine, what I call the tiny escalator! I assume it has a more official name like a stair climber or something, but I like to call it the tiny escalator.
Big changes have been made recently to improve what was already a great place to work out. The treadmills have all been replaced with wider-belt models. There are also new machines including rowers and coolest of all, accessible cardio machines. They can be lowered and raised and adjusted so that someone in a wheelchair can easily get into and out of them. Pretty awesome!
There’s also a giant area with free weights and strength-training machines, as well as an area dedicated to stretching (I really should spend more time in there…) Another new thing they added was this Synrgy 360 contraption. From what I could tell, you can do anything on it – it has a TRX strap, weights, resistance, I mean, everything. And you can sign up for classes to learn how to use it (and the other machines at Planet Fitness.)
All this for ten bucks a month?!? Are you kidding???
Well, I’m thinking of upgrading to the whopping twenty dollar a month membership. I had a chance to try out one of the perks you get with the “Black card” membership, the HydroMassage chair.
Holy cow. It was amazing. I have Achilles tendinitis in my left leg and sciatica and hamstring issues in my right leg (getting old is fun!) I sat down in the chair and adjusted the massage to target my legs and, well, it was pure heaven. I felt amazing afterwards, and I can tell you, I’d go work out more just to cool off in that contraption. Not to mention you get access to other features of the “Planet Fitness Spa.”
