How to Make a New Mom Gift Basket

Typically, baby showers are all about getting things that will be useful for the baby. But, what about the new mom? New moms typically do not know exactly what to expect when bringing a new baby home because they’ve never done it before. That’s when I came up with the idea of creating the “New Mom Gift Basket.”

My best friend will be welcoming her first baby soon and that means baby shower time. Being a sort of recent new mom, I thought back to what would have been helpful when we returned home from the hospital to begin our new adventure.

Here’s how to make a gift basket for a new mom:

Find a basket or container

It can be small, medium-sized or big. Hit up your local Target, Michaels, TJ Maxx or Walmart. I found a mid-side patterned cloth basket for around $5 at Walmart.

Grab some general goodies

I grabbed a few general items that would be helpful to any new mom. Think – help new mom de-stress. To me, this means, chocolate, snacks (cashews, peanuts), magazines. I added in some dry shampoo because we all know it’s hard for a new mom to catch a shower.

Help her pass the time

Real talk — the first few weeks are rough. I know she has long nights ahead. I also know that after you come out the fog of those first few weeks (ok, who am I kidding … the first year), it’s hard to remember little details. One of my favorite additions to the basket was a “Mom’s One Line Journal.” This will help her pass some time and will also help her recall some of those simple, endearing moments that may otherwise go by the wayside with mom brain.

Personalize it

I know my best friend likes Starbucks, so I threw in a gift card for when she needs to get out the house either with her new baby or when she has someone that can stay with the baby while she re-energizes sans babe. My friend also spends time at the pool and beach frequently, so I scooped up an insulated cup. My sister made a “Mom” decal and added it to the cup. It can double as not only a water-side cup but also a water cup for when she’s recovery from labor.

What are some other ideas for a gift basket?

The great thing about this idea is that you can spend as much or as little as your budget allows. Here are some more ideas on what you can add to your new mom gift basket creation.

For the nursing mama

  • Mother’s Milk Tea
  • Nursing tank or cami
  • Organic cloth nursing pads
  • Nursing cover
  • Gel pads or cream
  • Wine

For the mama that needs some extra hands

  • Housecleaning gift card
  • Certificate for you to babysit while she sleeps or showers or does whatever she pleases
  • Pumping bra
  • Gift card to a local food delivery service
  • Wine

For the mama who needs help passing time

  • Magazine
  • Crossword or puzzle book
  • Your list of top ten Netflix recs
  • Wine

For the mama who you want to nudge to relax

  • Gift certificate to get a massage
  • A bottle or two of fun new nail polish colors
  • Aromatherapy spray or linen spray
  • Wine

Most importantly, the one thing to give your new mama-friend is time. It is easy to feel like you fall into a black hole in those first few weeks. Make sure your friend knows you are there to listen, to support and to encourage.
