Let’s Get Ready For Summer :: Why My Family Joined the Club

Summers as a SAHM are tricky.

While I am grateful to have the time with my kids, they get bored. This will be my 4th summer as a SAHM. As my kids get older, the breaks from school get slightly more difficult. They have way more energy and no longer nap. If I let them stay on the iPads all day, all 3 of us will go insane. Add to the mix my husband who works from home when he is not on the road seeing clients. He has several conference calls per week that he needs to take from the house while my loud wild children are on break. It seems silly for us to spend money on summer camp when I am home, but the kids need to get out the house.

Solution: join an affordable country club, not the bougie kind.

We are not fancy, just a regular single income family. Most of the time I tell people we go to a “swim club” because I feel like “country club” sounds snobby. The cost for the whole family to join the club is equivalent to one session of summer camp for the kids. Also, the kids can do the swim team since we are members. Our neighbors joined at the same time as us, so it is nice to have friends to go with.

My kids and I operate best on a regular schedule. Our summer club schedule is to go every morning (except Wednesdays) for 10:30 am. Swim practice lasts 30 minutes, so I can relax and chat with my friend while the kids do their thing. After practice, the kids have access to 2 pools, diving boards (my kids are daredevils), a water slide, and a swing set. The whole campus is gated, so I can let them do their thing and check on them periodically. Obviously, I keep watch on the pool even though there are multiple life guards on duty. My kids always have different friends to play with. We enjoy ourselves until mid afternoon, and then go home for a late lunch. The club has a full service snack bar, but I limit the kids to lunch there on Fridays. We are there to swim and play and I don’t want them bleeding me dry on snacks and chicken tenders every day. After I successfully wear them out from all the fresh air and sun, they are happy to lay on the couch and watch a movie for several hours. Sometime we even go back and do evening swimming with my husband after work.

The country club works out great for our family because my kids love to swim. While it may not be ideal for every family, it is worth looking into.

Have you ever thought about joining a club?

    1. Would you be willing to offer the name of the country club you’re a member of or the names of some of the affordable options available?
