Why I’m Ditching Christmas Cards for Mardi Gras Cards

The holidays are a stressful time, period.

Now that I’m a mom, there is added pressure to make sure everything is perfect so my son will have the same magical memories I have from my childhood. Amid decorating my house, fighting holiday traffic, battling the crowds at the grocery store, and determining the perfect gift for everyone on my list, the season often leaves me with elevated blood pressure and an eyelid that wouldn’t stop twitching.

Something needed to give.

Mailing Christmas cards got left unchecked on my to-do list more often than not just because there isn’t enough time in the day to get that task accomplished.

We moved this year a week before Christmas, so needless to say — this year was one of those years where Christmas cards just weren’t going to happen. Sorry friends and family!

No, your card did not get lost in the mail … I’m just the crazy person who decided to move and host a Christmas Eve party a week after closing on the new house!

Every time I opened another beautiful card in the mail, a twinge of guilt surfaced. I love receiving holiday greetings, so to know that my loved ones didn’t also receive a card from me made me feel bad.

Since we needed to communicate our new address to everyone anyway, we decided to send out Mardi Gras cards this year instead. I have to tell you, this is definitely a tradition worth keeping!

Why are Mardi Gras cards more fun than Christmas cards?

People are used to getting mail around the holidays – it’s common and expected, but a Mardi Gras card? I know I’ve never received one! People immediately started texting me and telling me how much they loved it!

I love it too because I’m way less stressed in February/March – both with time and money! Plus, Mardi Gras is my family’s favorite holiday, so it seems apropos to mark the occasion each year with some snail mail.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to find a Mardi Gras template on the photo card sites, so I had to design a generic card and add some Mardi Gras flair! But who knows, if enough people from Louisiana adopt this tradition, you might see “Mardi Gras” listed in the seasonal card options!

What do you think? Anyone else in favor of sending out Mardi Gras cards in lieu of Christmas cards?

Happy Mardi Gras, from my family to yours!
