Be fearless in the pursuit of what sets your soul on fire.
When I first read the above quote, it really resonated with me. I am finally starting to go after the things I want out of life. And I want to be fearless as I chase my dreams.
The longer I stared at those words, the more I wanted to change the quote. Not the whole quote. Just one little word. In order for that quote to have an impact on me, I need to remove the word fearless and replace it with something else.
Be relentless in the pursuit of what sets your soul on fire.
The things that set my soul on fire also terrify me. I am scared to admit I wrote a book. I was scared while I was writing it. I’m still too scared to publish it. Fear creeps up on me when I tell the internet that I applied to speak at a conference. I was afraid while I was applying! When I go after anything I really want, fear comes with me.
If my goal were to fearlessly chase my dreams, I would fail miserably.
I was encouraged by the advice to be fearless when I follow my dreams until I started thinking about what really happens when we attempt to follow our dreams.
Your hands shake.
Your palms sweat.
Your heart pounds.
Your acute stress response turns on and your body screams to flee from this terrifying situation you have found yourself in.
I’m not sure if that is true for everyone, but it’s true for everyone I’ve discussed this subject with. How are we supposed to be fearless in the pursuit of what sets our soul on fire? Just the idea of our wildest dreams often terrifies us.
You have to jump out of the plane to understand.
After you take the metaphorical leap, you feel good. So good. After I take a step toward the things I really want, I am almost “high on life” for lack of a better term. Whether or not I achieve the thing I go after becomes secondary. It’s as if following my dream is the dream itself.
If we are unable follow our dreams fearlessly, what should we do?
Trembling and shaking, we should fill out that college application. Respond to that call for speakers. Purchase that domain name. Send that query letter. Apply for the dream job. With your heart racing, admit to yourself what you want to do most in the world, and begin taking steps to bring it to life.
As scary as this is to admit, I want to help others live to their fullest potential by helping them learn to love and accept themselves. I want to help you live out your dreams. Now it’s your turn.
What do you want most out of life?
