Drew Brees Broke a Record & Showed a Teachable Parenting Moment

It’s football season, y’all! The best time of the year (in my opinion) for many reasons. It means the weather is getting cooler … or in our case, closer to getting cooler. Good food, time with family, getting closer to the holidays. Such a fun time of the year!

I love watching football with my family on Sundays, especially since I started playing in a fantasy football league with my husband this year. Nothing like a little friendly competition!

For all of you fellow Saints fans out there, you know Drew Brees broke the all-time passing yards record this past week. [WHO DAT!] Something that really caught my attention, besides him breaking the record of course, was what he said to his kids after.

He ran up to them on the sidelines and said

“I love you guys so much. You can accomplish anything in life if you’re willing to work for it!”

This really hit home for me. Here Drew Brees is, breaking records and taking names, and one of the first things he says to his kids is about working hard for what you want. SUCH an important lesson to instill in our children.

As a parent, this is something I think all children should learn from an early age. Yes, I want to give my children the best, everything & more. I’ll often find myself buying them little things for no reason other than the fact that I think they’ll love it and be really excited about getting it. BUT, I don’t want my kids to ever feel entitled or like they don’t have to work for what they want.

What Drew Brees did on the sidelines during the game on Monday was truly wonderful … telling his children that they can achieve whatever they want in life, as long as they work for it, sets a fantastic example as a parent and leader in today’s world.

I’m sure we can all relate to such a teachable parenting moment from one of today’s greatest athletes.

Meghan lives on the Northshore with her husband, Brandon, and their two boys. She grew up on the Northshore and happily settled back in to raise her family there. When she's not playing referee between her 4 & 2 year olds, she enjoys watching the Food Network and trying to actually learn how to cook (or bake!) Meghan loves being a boy mom and can probably win at any kind of Ninja Turtle trivia.

  1. Conveniently forgetting he said this only to his sons, and not to his daughter. It was a beautiful moment but was tarnished by the fact that he ignored his daughter while saying these things to his sons. Daughters can accomplish anything in this life too.
