5 Reasons Your 30’s Are Awesome

When I approached 30, I thought I might have a coronary. Not because I wasn’t healthy; because I was terrified. The idea of leaving my twenties behind just made me feel old. No longer cool. But now that I’m in my mid thirties, it’s pretty awesome.

You can actually afford to do things

My husband recently surprised me with a birthday trip to Vegas with some of our closest friends. We had planned to go when I turned thirty, but Hurricane Isaac came and literally rained on my parade. Looking back though, I’m glad we did it this way. We were able to plan better, enjoy nice dinners, stay at a nice hotel. I even knew how to pace myself. The budget was a bit tighter in our twenties. We were in grad school for part of it, still pinching pennies. In your thirties, you learn to set a budget so you can go to Dominica instead of Olive Garden for your birthday.

You finally know who you are

My style is WAY better now than in my twenties. I was still figuring out what my style actually was, both in fashion and design. I didn’t know about key pieces in your wardrobe to mix and match outfits; I had no idea how to decorate my house. Luckily, we moved into a new home 2 years ago, and I was able to clean out my wardrobe and my house. I started from scratch, finally truly confident in my own skin.

You start raising tiny humans

Raising children is tough business. Although this is definitely the hardest thing I’ve ever done, its also the most rewarding. Some days I am exhausted, my house is a mess and my laundry is out of control. But my boys are playing, smiling and growing. These tiny humans we created that we love unconditionally. While sometimes they act like your drunk friend, they are the best thing I’ve ever done.

You are more refined

I was blessed enough to go to Europe for part of my MBA studies. I took on the mantra of “when in Rome” and set out to try everything. I ate es cargot, pate, duck and <gasp!> even horse. I learned I liked wine other than reisling and beers other than Bud Light (those were my step up from zinfandel and natural light). My husband and I returned home drinking red wines and cooking real meals. While I may still sneak bites of my kids macaroni, at least now I can make a proper dinner paired with a nice wine.

You are <mostly> established in your career

Not long after I finished grad school, I was laid off. Although I wasn’t entirely happy with the company, I was still devastated. I had given so much of myself, working in various roles with the company for nearly half of my life. But God had a bigger and even better plan for me. We purchased an Anytime Fitness, which I loved. It was also so difficult once we had children, and I often had to choose business or family first. We made the painstaking decision to sell after 5 years. After a little time off, I started freelancing marketing and Rodan & Fields again and threw myself into this blog, resulting in a media relations role. I now freelance from home and have the flexibility to be with my kids. I didn’t see myself here, but now can’t see it any other way. Even if you’re still switching jobs, once you hit your thirties, you have direction and can see a path.

What do you enjoy most about your thirties?
