10 Things I Hate About What’s Going On :: COVID-19

Yes, this post is a pun on the movie, 10 Things I Hate About You. I’m trying to keep it light; you will see why.

  1. I hate that people think I am insensitive for not freaking out.
  2. I hate that people think I should agree with their beliefs on what’s happening.
  3. I hate that people blame each other for the spread of this virus.
  4. I hate that I am judged for not having a panic attack every day.
  5. I hate that people think I do not have fears and worry.
  6. I hate that I am arbitrated for not believing everything the news outlets say.
  7. I hate that people do not realize there are other steps to take in addition to social distancing.
  8. I hate that folks are using social media as a platform to scare the you know what out of people.
  9. I hate that people are not using common sense.
  10. I hate that I have to write this post, but I feel the need to share.

I can tell you what I don’t hate is that I have a strong desire, every day, even before this, to make people feel better and exude positivity. Freaking out, panicking, posting about and texting all day about it is not changing anything. Preparing, making smart decisions, making the best of it will change something. A quote I have had at my desk since I started my career states “worry is like a rocking chair, you go back and forth, but never move forward”.

For those who think I am too lackadaisical and don’t fear this, you are wrong. I just choose to spend my time focusing on the positive and checking in on loved ones, FaceTiming and sending memes that make them laugh. Nothing is worse for your mental health, or the mental health of the community than fear, worry, and panic. It’s proven that immune systems lower when stressed. Yes, this is a stressful situation for a lot of people – regardless of the virus, the economy is suffering, businesses are suffering – but let’s band together with some positivity and stop judging each other.

Stay off of mainstream media. Stay off of your phone when possible. Hang out with your family. Take your dog for a walk (I know you just read that to the tune of DJ Jubilee’s song). Unplug when possible. Wash your hands. Sanitize your commonly used electronics, door knobs etc. And most importantly, do not let anyone steal your happiness.

“But mostly, I hate the way that I do not hate anyone, not even close, not even a little bit, not even at all!”

I love my country – let’s stick together!
