Flour Moon :: The Holy Grail of the THE PERFECT BITE
About 15 years ago, I met someone who taught me so much about parenting and life in general. She taught me how to enjoy the simple things in life, especially when it is food related as she even has her own cookbook. We would eat lunch together and she would carefully plan her meals and would create “a perfect bite” with the elements of her lunch. What’s a perfect bite, you may ask? It’s spicy, salty, hot, cold, smooth or crunchy whatever the whole meal consists of and all of the things that make you want to go back for more. I would literally sit there at lunch after eating my boring lunch and watch her create each bite, so much so that sometimes she would give me a perfect bite from her lunch. Every time I go to my new favorite spot, Flour Moon, I reminisce about her perfect bites while I eat a perfect bite. The perfect bite for me at Flour Moon is a Rosemary and Sea Salt Bagel with scallion cream cheese.
How can a “bagel place” provide the perfect bite? Unless you have had a bagel from Flour Moon or a New York bagel, you probably do not have a frame of reference. Their bagels are doughy on the inside with the perfect amount of firmness on the outside. Think of the bagels that you get from your favorite cafe’ …. they are nothing like those hockey pucks.
Flour Moon is so much more than a bagel eatery, they are truly curators of the perfect bite.
The Skeptic
A girlfriend introduced me to Flour Moon, and I have tried to find time to visit every week since that introduction to get my perfect bite. One weekend, I decided to bring my husband, a big skeptic. He ordered the rare roast beef and discovered that he, too, loves their bagels. Not only do they serve bagels, but they serve bagel sandwiches with traditional accoutrements but also have daily and or weekly specials that highlight vegetables and fruits that are in season.
Quality Items
The owners, Jeff and Breanne, do not skimp on anything. Their toppings are always fresh and flavorful, sometimes you can purchase the very fruit or vegetables from a vendor right outside of the restaurant; follow them on Instagram for notifications.
Let’s talk about the best breakfast sandwich in the city, if I may. On our way to a recent family vacation, we stopped at Flour Moon. Sure enough, my husband ordered the “Classic Breakfast,” folded egg, American, Muenster & chili crisp mayo and sausage on a Rosemary Sea Salt bagel. Again, each bite my husband took led to an audible groan and a yes head motion with each bite, no exaggeration. I ordered 3 extra bagels for the ride, and we barely made it out of Louisiana before they were in my kids’ bellies.
Service
Every time we go to Flour Moon which is weekly at this time, the staff has begun to remember our faces and are always friendly. Ordering online, when available, is the way to go if you plan on taking your food away. Every time we’ve ordered take away, it is always ready and waiting for pick up.
Even though I enjoy a bagel with scallion cream cheese, the kids enjoy their bagels with plain cream cheese or butter, my husband likes the bagels that pack the punch to keep you full until your next meal. Whether you get a bagel and cream cheese or a breakfast sandwich, rest assured that you will always have the perfect bite, the perfect bite and the perfect service keep us going back weekly if not more.
