VarageSale :: The Easy Way to Save Money During the Holidays

It’s the most wonderful time of the year … for shopping! But if your family is anywhere near the size of mine, you know that the holidays can get expensive, y’all! That’s why this year I am rethinking the way I shop for the holidays.

A couple of months ago, I shared my experience with VarageSale. I explained how it works and why I think it is an excellent platform to make supplemental income and keep your closets from overflowing with things you don’t need anymore. Here is a basic refresher for you: VarageSale is an online marketplace where you can buy and sell items locally. Currently the New Orleans area has two communities: the Kenner/Metairie Community and the Westbank Online Garage Sale. VarageSale can be accessed at, and is available on iOS, Android and Kindle devices.

Now, back to why, when it comes to the holidays this year, I am All About That VarageSale.

1. You Can Earn Money For Holiday Shopping ::

Do your kids want the latest toys, but seem to ignore most of the ones that are already sprawled around the house? Why not sell some of their neglected toys to earn money to buy what they’re asking Santa for this year? Chances are, there is a mom on VarageSale currently looking for a toy that your children no longer use. This year, I’m getting a fancy blender for Christmas so I sold my old one (still in excellent condition) on VarageSale. In two weeks, with very little effort I made over $200 selling various things around the house that I wasn’t using anymore.

2. You Can Buy Holiday Presents ::

Remember a second ago, when I suggested that you sell neglected toys because there’s probably a mom out there who would buy them? Case in point: I recently wanted to buy my son a plastic slide for our yard, but I definitely didn’t want to spend $50+ for a new one. After a brief search on VarageSale, I found a used slide for $15. My son doesn’t care that it’s not new (Hey – it’s environmentally friendly!). This hunk of plastic that had been sitting abandoned in another mom’s backyard is now my son’s most prized possession. On VarageSale, one kid’s trash is another kid’s treasure.

3. You Can Buy/Sell Holiday Outfits ::

Raise your hand if you have spent $50+ on a holiday outfit for your child that was only worn once or twice, maybe even for minutes. I don’t know about you, but my hand is up. Last year, I purchased a fancy smocked outfit for my son. He wore it for about 2 hours on Christmas morning. That’s it. What a waste.

This year, I turned to VarageSale for Ben’s holiday duds. Not only am I selling his old outfits, I found a smocked Christmas longall for only $9.50! It looks brand new {probably because another kid only wore it for two hours on Christmas morning}, and I know that Ben will look perfectly adorable in it!

4. You Can Buy/Upcycle Holiday Decor ::

Before paying retail for holiday decor, give VarageSale a shot. You can find everything from artificial Christmas trees to ornaments to outdoor decorations. You can even refurbish regular decorations to work for the holidays. I made a family Christmas poster that I wanted to place on our mantle, but I needed a frame. I found a 20 x 24 frame for only $2.50. With a quick coat of paint and new mat, I will have a beautiful holiday decoration for little money.

So, let us know, have you tried VarageSale yet? If so, what was the greatest deal you’ve gotten so far?  If not, it’s time to get started!

Marie is the owner of Little Hometown, a company specializing in locally themed baby swaddles and apparel. Prior to opening her business, Marie was a professional event planner turned stay-at-home mom. She spent nearly a decade living in New York City, where she met her husband, Jeff (a New England native). Early in their relationship, Marie told Jeff that New Orleans is the only place where she would want to raise her children. As soon as she got pregnant, they started shopping for houses. They moved back in December of 2012, welcomed their son in 2013 and their daughter in 2015. Marie now spends her days entertaining her kids with silly songs, desperately attempting to stay organized, and balance her life as a work-at-home mom.

  1. You KNOW I’m a VarageSale Addict! My greatest find was the amount of new friendships I’ve found through the swaps. My best deal/steal (if I can only pick one) has got to be shoes… practically new Keds for my daughter for $3-5, Nikes for both kids $8 and under, Skechers for me for $5! I also got both kids their Halloween costumes on VS for $14 total. I also found my babysitter through VS — priceless because she’s also become a really good friend and our kids adore each other. Tell me why you DON’T wanna try out VS and I’ve give you a reason why you SHOULD! #vsaddict #swaptillyoudrop

  2. I haven’t tried Varage Sale. However, after reading about all the great items and low cost, I plan to do it tonight. Thanks for the great information.

  3. Total Varage Sale addict.. Even my 7 year old is into it!! He loves going to swap on Sundays. He’s cleaning out his closet to find toys to sell so he has room for Santa toys. I’m had some amazing finds and made a lot of extra cash. I love the ladies (and few gentlemen) I talk to each and every week!!

  4. Love varage sale …. started 3 weeks ago and have got to say I have made 400+ that has definitely helped with bills and early Christmas shopping …. people on here are sooo nice and reliable, and besides selling I have also found some amazing deals like shoes for my daughter for $2, and long sleeve shirts for $1… I’m absolutely in live and so grateful there is this app.
