When A Woman Cuts Her Hair

I know you’ve heard that saying, “When a woman cuts her hair, she’s about to change her life.” Is it true? Absolutely. Cutting your hair is a major decision. I’m not talking about a trim here. I’m talking about inches. I’m talking about a cut that makes you look like a different person. That one.

I’ve cut my hair twice in my entire life. The first time was in 2012 because of breakage. I decided to lighten my hair, like we all do, and the color damaged my hair. So I cut it. It wasn’t solely my decision, but I knew that I had to start over. Cutting my hair symbolized starting over. It was a fresh start. There’s another quote that says “cut off your dead ends for growth and I’m not just talking about your hair.” Dead ends are things that drain your energy and steal your joy. Cut them.

A new haircut is freeing in so many ways. Something about it instantly boosts your confidence. Your smile is wider. Your eyes are brighter. In the words of the old Kanye West, “can’t nobody tell me nothing.” I wish that we could hold on to that feeling forever! If I could, I would bottle it up and share it with people when they need it!

Fast forward to my second haircut. It was January 23, 2019. One month after Moe’s passing. At a time when my life was spiraling out of control, I needed to do something. I thought about the one thing that I could do and it was to cut my hair. Now, I didn’t just wake up and grab a pair of scissors. My stylist and I discussed cutting my hair a few times, today would be the day.

I took one last look in the mirror at the big pillow of curls on top of my head and I was ready to say goodbye. If you recall from my previous blog, my husband pulled my hair the night before he passed. It was truly a goodbye for me. The tears started flowing and the cutting began. I looked on the floor. In those piles of hair were years of growth and years of heartache.

I looked up and I saw ME. I saw a woman who had been through so much hurt and sadness, but at THAT moment, I felt ALIVE. I told y’all, a haircut can change your life.

I’m not telling you to cut all of your hair off, but I am telling you if you were looking for that sign to start LIVING, this is IT.
