What to Expect When Going Into a Bra Fitting :: A Fitters Guide to Understanding the Technique

Big Boobs, Little Boobs … We all have to find that perfect bra to make us feel confident.

Working in a lingerie shop, I really never know what to expect. I get a ton of questions from every client that comes in, but they’re all looking for the same thing, a very comfortable bra that makes them look good on the outside.

I always tell my clients that yes comfort is key, but for a properly fitting bra, you have to understand the importance of why a good sturdy foundation is key.

My Definition of an “Everyday” Bra

Most of the women that walk in the store all ask for an everyday bra, but when told that, I ask “What is an everyday bra?”

Most women look for a nice “everyday” bra that they can wear and lounge in. To be honest, it all depends on the size. For us bustier ladies, in order to get the support and lift you need, you may need the seams. Seams are great for support, control, and beautiful shape. I LOVE SEAMS. Some smoother styles may also have the lift that we may want, but it all depends on the size that we are in. And I always say that “people know we are wearing bras so what’s showing a little seam?”

Snug Band Equals Longevity

Whenever I fit my ladies into the proper size, most of them tell me “I can feel the band,” and I ask, “well is it tight or snug?” and the answer is always snug. So, to tell if the band is tight compared to snug, we look for a two-finger pull or slide to ensure the room of a snug band, it helps the longevity of our bra. When hooking our bands on the loosest hooking system, that means that the band is too big. When we start on the tightest set, that gives us time for our band to stretch and our bras will last us 6 months to a year life span that they are supposed to.

Always Remember, Bras Run Like Jeans

All sizes are not created equal. When getting fitted, just remember that one size in one style or brand isn’t always the same. Bras run like jeans so we must always try them on and not get frustrated if it’s not that style for you. They make so many cute styles for every size; just find your favorite bra boutique or shop and talk to a professional bra fitter.
