All Dressed Up and Nowhere to Go

At my first big girl job out of college I wore pantyhose (it was dress code), pencil skirts, blazers, and pumps to wash cars. I loved it. Getting dressed up for work was exciting to me. All of the years that I worked I really appreciated business professional attire. Of course I did my hair and makeup every day. Even in the middle of August in 100 degree heat and humidity, I would traipse around Mid City in heels with my fresh makeup melting off.

When I decided to quit my job, I was a little sad to not have an excuse to get all ready every day. I didn’t really have anywhere to go. It was just me hanging out with a newborn and toddler all day. I could have just stayed in my pajamas all day but that seemed a little depressing. I liked having my daily routine for work, so I had to make a new routine for my SAHM life.

Basically I have had about the same weekday schedule for myself the last 3 years. It is a nice balance between pj days, gym clothes days, and all dressed up with nowhere to go days. Three days a week, I hit the gym. Depending on the time of my class, I might put on the basics: foundation, concealer, and mascara. Once a week, my youngest and I hangout with my grandma at Chick Fil A, so I wear a casual, functional outfit and basics + eye shadow. I am lucky that my mom has an off day in the middle of the week. We usually go out to lunch and go shopping or run errands together. That is my day that I wear a cuter top or casual dress. Weekends are lagniappe.

I fully appreciate that I have the luxury to stay in my pjs all day and that is wonderful when the boys are sick or the weather is nasty. For my own sanity, I need to look like a human at least 2 days a week. For me looking like a human is wearing actual structured clothing, my hair is neat, I’m wearing jewelry and minimal makeup is applied. I love doing my makeup. One of the hobbies I have picked up since becoming a SAHM is watching YouTube tutorials. I feel like I have a better mind set going into my day if I take 10-20 minutes to get myself together before hauling my kids all over the place and running 1,000 errands.

I don’t mind facing the world with the dark circles my kids gave me. However, I am way more psyched up about going to Target if I am a little made up.

  1. I can relate to this. I work full time but I recently switched to wearing scrubs everyday and it definitely takes a toll on you emotionally. Now I really value the days I get to put real clothes on!
