A few years ago, I took a 23 & Me DNA test. I was really hoping there would be a surprise in there, but to my dismay, nothing. I am 100% European. So, as you can imagine, I BURN. No beautiful glowy tan for this see-through skin. The process is burn, freckle, then back to being see-through again. As I age, I am also very aware of the health of my skin, which includes wrinkles, sun damage, and even the possibility of skin cancer. As a former cancer survivor, I am no longer willing to take a chance.
I polled the wonderful women of New Orleans Mom, Red Stick Mom, and Lafayette Mom teams to find out their favorite sunscreens. Here are some of our favorites.
Neutrogena Beach Defense – This sunscreen smells like paradise. It lasts for about an hour on me and I did not get a sunburn at all.
Elta MD – I personally use this every day on my face, especially the tinted one, as it looks like a BB cream or lightweight foundation. I rarely wear foundation as it causes my skin to just do crazy stuff. Most foundation for me either sits on top of my skin and is very visible, or it cakes, or shows where I have dry skin patches. This stuff is it for me … get you some.
Blue Lizard – Mineral sunscreens are reef safe, which is something I learned when we went to Hawaii. This is also great for people with eczema prone skin. The con to this mineral sunscreen is, it will stick to everything.
Bare Republic – This is also a great mineral sunscreen that is reef safe. Vegan and cruelty free.
Black Girl Sunscreen – This provides great coverage and does not leave residue on your skin. Suitable for all skin types but great for people of color.
Supergoop – While the price tag on this is quite steep, you get what you pay for. This stuff works so well for all skin types, and it really protects you. A little bit goes a long way in my opinion.
La Roche-Posay – I have not used their sunscreen, but I use their face wash and it is my absolute favorite, so I know you can’t go wrong with this brand for anything.
Sun Bum – This stuff, y’all. Besides having a great product for sunscreen, they also have a wonderful lip balm. I had one of those days where I should have been more aware of the sun and my poor boo got super sunburned. His poor lips were so bad and dry. After that, I went and bought the Sun Bum lip balm with SPF.
Cetaphil – one of our writers got this brand as a sample and was pleasantly surprised how well it stacked up to the more expensive brands.
Kiehl’s – This is great for sensitive skin as well and can be used daily and under makeup.
