The Truth about Ear Piercing :: From One Kid to Another

This is the thought process and experience of a seven-year-old getting her ears pierced, written in {mostly} her own words.

Before I got my ears pierced, I felt really scared. Twice, I went to have them pierced then backed out at the last minute. The first time, I got really scared and wanted to leave. The next time, we went to a tattoo place on Magazine Street. I wanted to have it done that day, but they did not have any pink earrings, and I was still a little scared.getting daughter's ears pierced

Finally, right before I turned seven, I was ready. I was still scared, but I saw all my friends in Kindergarten with popsicle earrings and other cute ones, and I knew I wanted to have some like that. The only way to get the cute earrings was to get my ears pierced.

When I was in Dallas this summer my mom found a place that pierced ears with a needle. She said it wouldn’t hurt as bad as the gun they use at the mall. I really wanted to do it, but I was scared it would hurt. I was going to be brave though.

I couldn’t get the first earrings I picked out because they were too big and not for people getting their ears pierced. The lady said I had to pick from silver or gold balls. I picked the gold.

I sat on my mom’s lap and the lady sprayed numbing stuff on my ears. She said that would help it not hurt. I knew it was coming, and I felt nervous and scared but excited too. Then, she just pushed the needle through my ear. It felt like a pinch. I cried a little. You can see the video below and know it is not that bad:

My ears were sore for a while, and we had to clean them twice a day, plus twist them! Twisting them really hurt, but only for a second.

After a while, my ears started to feel better, and I thought I could take them out. I was wrong. We took them out for a couple of days, and they nearly closed up. This was after the 12 weeks they said to wait. I would wait longer than what they say before taking them out. Since then, I have just kept my same earrings in.

Even though it hurt, I am very glad I have my earrings. I can’t wait to be able to wear popsicle ones!

  1. What was the tattoo place on magazine where she was going to have it done? Currently looking for somewhere for my daughter who’s asking to get her ears pierced.
