Say Goodbye to Shaving and Waxing at Saintly Skin

Raise your hands if you begged your mom for years on end to shave only to discover – after a decade of shower drudgery – that it was just not that fun after all. Just me? I’m not even sure how this topic came up when it did, but one very early morning (around 5:10am, to be precise) I found myself deep in a conversation about being tired of shaving with the women in my exercise class. Many of us agreed that waxing was indeed better than shaving, but at the same time waxing is one more appointment to keep up with, which can be hard as a working mom. Not to mention, if you receive a waxing service (or two) every month, the cost adds up rather quickly. It was during this conversation that a workout buddy convinced me that I needed to try Saintly Skin, a local woman-owned Medspa in Metairie. She herself had just finished a round of IPL treatments on her bikini area and underarms and strongly encouraged the rest of us to consider the possibility of no more razor burn. I had always been intrigued by the idea of more permanent hair removal, and her recommendation was the push I needed to give it a try.

Later that day, I called Saintly Skin to get more information about the process, cost, timeline and commitment. The woman who answered was extremely kind and professional and talked me through all of the various pricing options, including a monthly membership, a package or a la carte services. She also explained everything I could expect from the process, as well as what I needed to bring to my first appointment. Because I did not know how my skin would react or whether I’d fall in love, I decided to move forward with JUST my bikini line (some people choose to do more than one area of their body at the same time). At the time, Saintly Skin was running a special and I took it as the second sign that I needed to take the hair removal plunge.

What is IPL Treatment? {Hair Removal}

Let me start by saying that IPL Treatment is an investment. However, in my case, for all of the time and money I was spending on waxing, I was happy to pay for a treatment thatlaser hair removal New Orleans would eliminate the need to ever wax again. IPL Treatment, in short, is a high technology way to remove hair from your body in a semi-permanent manner. I say semi-permanent because many people find that they do need a maintenance treatment once per year, and some people have a few pesky hairs that linger. The lingering hairs, though, are much fewer than prior to treatment and are very easily taken care of at home with a razor. The overall success of treatment is entirely contingent on a number of factors that vary by patient, including hair type, hair texture, ethnicity and just general response to treatment. For me personally, I noticed a difference right away (yes, after treatment number one) in the reduction of new hair growth. IPL Treatments are done in 6 total sessions, spaced 4 weeks apart. IPL is also designed for all skin types and tones. Therefore, for 6 months IPL treatments are – in essence – the same as going to waxing appointments. With each appointment I saw further improvement in the reduction of hair growth. In between appointments you can indeed continue to shave if desired.

The most popular question I received from friends while going through IPL treatments on my bikini line was, “but does it hurt?!” My answer was, “if you have birthed children, you can do this.” The easiest way to describe it is like a tiny, hot pin prick on your skin. During treatments, which happen on a comfortable massage table, I mentally kept my eye on the prize :: no more hair! No more last minute shaving on a beach trip! I found the owner of Saintly Skin, Megan, absolutely terrific at her profession and very easy to converse with. Both she and the other professionals who treated me always asked if it felt okay, how I was responding to treatment and assured me that I could ask them to stop if needed. In my case, each treatment took no longer than 8-10 minutes. It’s really very fast and efficient! The environment is clean, calm and welcoming.

What’s the Benefit of a Medspa?

While it is true that you can receive similar procedures and other cosmetic services at a variety of places, based on my own personal research, I would strongly recommend considering a Medspa like Saintly Skin. A med spa is a combination of an aesthetic medical center and a more traditional day spa that provides nonsurgical aesthetic medical services under the supervision of a licensed physician. “The American Med Spa Association defines a medical spa as a hybrid between an aesthetic medical center and a day spa” with four core elements: (1) the provision of non-invasive (i.e. non-surgical) aesthetic medical services; (2) under the general supervision of a licensed physician; (3) performed by trained, experienced and qualified practitioners; (4) with onsite supervision by a licensed healthcare professional. At Saintly Skin, you can be confident that there are actual medical staff on hand and available to answer your questions. This is critical because most of these services are indeed medical in nature, thus should be performed with the knowledge, insight and oversight of a board-certified practitioner.

Overall I am thrilled with not only the outcome of my first IPL treatment but also the service at Saintly Skin overall. I am now mid-treatment on my underarms and strongly recommend that New Orleans moms look into the options and consider giving it a try!
