Let The Good Times Roll (and attend Mardi Gras) in Houma

There is no place like Houma. I say it often, and truly mean it. We love New Orleans absolutely, but we also love our Houma. If you didn’t know, Houma offers some fabulous Mardi Gras parades.

Here are some reasons why you should maybe skip a parade in the city, roll on down south, and see what Houma has to offer:

  • All Houma parades cater to the kids. In Houma it is often said, “It’s about the kids anyway!” when you hear someone referring to Mardi Gras. There definitely is no shortage of love shown with throws thrown to the kids. Our garage is usually billowing of light-up toys, stuffed animals, and noise makers the kids have caught. Not to mention the beads … oh the never-ending pile of beads!
  • Houma proudly offers a dozen Mardi Gras parades, and is the second largest Mardi Gras celebration in Louisiana (according to some sources). During the days leading up to Mardi Gras, there are multiple krewe sponsored parades and events every day (midday, afternoon, and evening). Surely you can find one to cater to your kiddo’s nap schedule.
  • We treat parades like football games. We find a spot to park, throw food on the grill, drink, dance and be merry until the parade starts. There’s nothing better than a beautiful day spent letting the good times roll.
  • There are spots where you can catch the parade without sitting outside for 12 hours to reserve it. The mall is a great spot to catch the parade – and it’s where the parade starts. This makes for easy exit for those early bedtimes, and the parking is free.
  • No ladders. No offense, NOLA, but we don’t set up ladders here for the kiddos. It’s more of a “park your truck and throw the kids in the back” kind of town. Let’s be honest, this just makes things easier.
  • Hotel prices are relatively cheap. From doing a quick search, I found all hotels in Houma are less than $100 a night during Mardi Gras. That’s low enough to come, catch a parade, and spend the night making a Mardi Gras vacation for the family. My kids love to spend the night in a hotel, even if it is a few miles away from home!
  • We have less tourists holistically than NOLA. Houma does have a lot of visitors, but you’ll mainly find locals here. I like this atmosphere when bringing my kiddos to a parade. Locals know more of the parade “etiquette” than visitors.
  • If you are a visitor, you’ll be treated like a local in no time. Although this is a contrast to the line above, Houmanians have no problem visiting with you, finding out where you’re from, and offering you a drink or some food. They’ll show you the etiquette, and treat you like family before the parade is over.

If you decide to come to Houma to see a parade, the schedule is listed at the Houma Area Convention & Visitors Bureau. Come see why there’s no place to Mardi Gras like Houma!
