Jefferson Performing Arts Society will present Fly, a 2009 play by Trey Ellis and Ricardo Kahn about the Tuskegee Airmen of World War Two, on February 4-13, 2022, at Jefferson Performing Arts Center. The play is directed by Tommye Myrick, a 2020 Big Easy Lifetime Achievement in Theatre recipient who founded Voices in the Dark Repertory Company in 1992.
Fly tells the story of the 332nd Fighter Group of the United States Army Air Forces which came to be known as the “Tuskegee Airmen,” after the Tuskegee, Alabama, location of the training school where they earned their wings.
Fly combines live action, video, and the dynamic character of “Tap Griot,” a tapdancing storyteller who conveys the anger and fear as well as the joy and pride of the officers silenced by their captains and their country. Military marches, actual combat footage, vibrant sound effects and lighting, all contribute to a stellar 90-minute no intermission presentation.
Fly was commissioned in 2005 by the Lincoln Center Institute, the educational arm of Lincoln Center, where playwright Ricardo Khan was an artist-in-residence. While the play addresses institutional racism, at its core is the pursuit of any dream: “The play is about lifting yourself from what holds you down, reaching for your dream and elevating yourself to that place in the mind and the heart that’s the sky,” says Kahn.
The play runs for two weekends in February, Fridays through Sundays February 4-13, 2022. For a full schedule, directions to the Jefferson Performing Arts Center, and ticket information, visit www.jpas.org or call the box office at 504-885-2000.
