Inspiring Future Women Engineers in New Orleans …
Calling all NOLA girls, ages 3-5! Tinkergate Sessions Available to Local Girls
Engineer? Inventor? Architect? Scientist? While it may seem a bit too soon to explore this career track for your girl, it is never too early to pique your daughter’s interest. Save the date for Tinkergate!
The art of tinkering leads to constant learning and endless discoveries. By creating a designated Tinker Lab for the youngest of students, McGehee School is providing local girls an opportunity to find their “inner scientist” as they don their lab coats and goggles to deconstruct, build and invent. In just a few weeks, there will be two fall sessions for local girls ages 3, 4 and 5.
Dates available ::
- September 16 – October 16 (9 sessions @ $225)
- October 21 – November 20 (10 sessions @ $250)

What Happens at Tinkergate?
Our aspiring young scientists will have the opportunity to deconstruct objects, build new ones, ponder ideas and collaborate with peers. As these Tinkergate students experiment they will gain confidence in their own ideas and abilities, all while exploring the wonderful world around them. By deconstructing objects and figuring out how they work and by working with recycled, reused and repurposed materials to create something new, they will soon become comfortable with the process of observing, exploring, experimenting, analyzing and reflecting—all crucial elements to the Reggio Emilia approach we take at McGehee’s Little Gate.
As a start our curious and bold young students will:
- deconstruct old toys, radios, clocks, toasters and more to learn about what is inside these items and to ponder and discuss how they work
- build and design
- create 3D designs with tape, scrap materials
- experiment with a variety of different tools and materials – such as screwdrivers, pliers, wire cutters, nuts, bolts, battery chargers and more
Why Does STEM Matter?
Many of us still think of little boys and their tinkering toys – the tool chest, the hardhat – everything that would make a young Bob the Builder type very happy. For years, items like these have been considered “boys’ toys.” It is time to level the playing field, inspire our young girls and get them creating and building. Last year’s best selling items at McGehee’s book fair were located on the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) stage. Lego’s robot kits, simple machines and inventions were toys the all-girls’ school couldn’t keep in stock. And the other item that flew off the shelf? Goldiblox, a construction toy designed specifically for girls that is a literature based tinkering kit that encourages them to build amazing creations.
According to the White House’s Office of Science and Technology Policy, “Women in STEM jobs earn 33 percent more than those in non-STEM occupations and experience a smaller wage gap relative to men. And STEM careers offer women the opportunity to engage in some of the most exciting realms of discovery and technological innovation. Increasing opportunities for women in these fields is an important step towards realizing greater economic success and equality for women across the board.”
