Cool Zoo at Audubon Zoo :: Opens on May 6, 2023

Whether you are traveling to New Orleans on vacation or live in the city year-round, the heat can be one of the only downsides about Louisiana! If you need to cool off, the Cool Zoo is one of the best things to do with kids in New Orleans. Of course, New Orleans Mom has dozens of other suggestions for enjoying the city, too.

Things to Do in New Orleans With Kids

Whether we like it or not, summer is on the way here in New Orleans. It’s noticeably warmer, the days are longer and school is sadly winding down. Thankfully, dozens of warm weather activities are available for families in New Orleans, including one of our very favorites … the Audubon Cool Zoo!

The Cool Zoo Opens May 6, 2023

The Cool Zoo will be open starting in two short weeks on Saturday, May 6, 2023.things to do in New Orleans with kids

Throughout May, the Cool Zoo will only be open on weekends. Then, starting on Monday, May 29, 2023 the Cool Zoo will be available for New Orleans families 5 days a week for most of the summer!

Dates :: open weekends only starting May 6, 2023 … 5 days/week starting May 29, 2023 … August 5 – September 4, 2023 returns to the weekend only schedule

Cost :: it is important to know that Cool Zoo is NOT included with Zoo admission, nor Zoo memberships. You do need to purchase tickets to the Cool Zoo separately ($8 for members; $10 for non-members … this is in addition to the zoo admission).

Rafts / life jackets :: these are free and included for guests; little ones under 48 inches MUST have a life vest in the lazy river

Know before you go :: you should bring your own towel and there is food available for purchase. There is an elaborate splash pad that overlooks the elephant exhibit, as well as a lazy river that takes roughly 7 minutes to float. My kids love the water slide and are happy using it on repeat! Strollers ARE welcome, and there is shaded seating available.

Is the Cool Zoo Worth It?

On a pretty day in New Orleans when it’s hotter than hot, we say yes. We recommend arriving EARLY so that it is less crowded AND you can maximize your time given the admission price. If your kids like the water, they will burn energy and have fun while doing it! It can be a tad overwhelming for smaller kids, but don’t let that deter you … a weekday morning may be the best choice for your family, as the weekends tend to be more crowded and chaotic.
