Unpopular Opinion: My Husband Rocks at Gift Giving

It’s that time of year! The time when women love to share the worst gift their significant other ever gave them. Clothing or jewelry you’d NEVER wear. A gadget you question if it was really meant for you or them. Gifts that seem more like an afterthought. Ladies, I get it. Sometimes men just don’t seem to have a clue. But, you won’t hear me chime in on these conversations. Sure, I might smile and listen, but there’s not much I can add.

Truth is, my husband rocks at gift giving.

When we were dating, he bought me posters to decorate my dorm room. He had heard me talk about the blank white walls, so he ordered posters of my favorite things and mailed them to me (Note: we dated long distance). When I mentioned wanting to teach myself how to cook, he sent me a Rachael Ray cookbook because I was raving about her cooking show. Over ten years later, and I still use that cookbook. He made the mix tapes. He bought the flowers.

“Yeah, yeah, every guy does that while they’re DATING! But it all changes after you get married!” Not the case here.

Even after ten years of marriage, he still outdoes me with gift giving. I’m not talking about giving the most over-the-top, expensive gift. His gifts are always thoughtful and show that he’s been paying attention. The Christmas I was nine months pregnant with our son, my husband gave me a plush, comfy robe to replace my old one and a digital picture frame for future baby photos. I don’t usually make a list, yet he still knows what sort of things I’d love.

It challenges me to give him gifts he’d love because, truthfully, I am the worst gift giver.

It’s like our roles are reversed. That’s also the reason why I don’t chime in on the “worst gift” conversations. I’d be admitting the bad gifts I gave. Like a book of tools that sat on the shelf for years unopened. Or headphones that broke after a week.

Icing on the gift giving cake – my husband does most of the Christmas shopping! Most of the gifts our son receives are handpicked from his dad. Not a big surprise here, but he’s also good at picking out gifts for our kid, too.

So, ladies, here’s the lesson to be learned.

Gift giving does not always come naturally. I am proof. If your husband doesn’t rock at gift giving, help a guy out. Give a detailed list! Don’t just drop hints because they’ll probably go right over his head (speaking from experience here). Like me, they might just need a little help.

If your husband also rocks at gift giving, what’s the BEST gift they ever gave you? Please share!
