Haunt If You Dare :: Haunted Houses Around New Orleans

Haunt If You Dare

If you’re like me, you love this time of the year. The weather gets cooler (thank you sweet baby Jesus), pumpkin everything makes its debut, it’s time to decorate your home in skeletons and not be judged, and everyone is just in a better mood.

Besides decorating and going to all of the Halloween stores, I love to bake, drink hot chocolate, and put on a scary movie to watch. For a more frightening experience, you can partake in the many haunted attractions in our area. Get your blood pumping with this terrifying list below!

Note :: Many of these haunted attractions may not be advised for children younger than 12 years old or individuals with certain medical conditions. Please use discretion.

New Orleans Metro

The Mortuary Haunted House (4800 Canal St) :: Open most Friday, Saturdays, & Sundays in the Fall, this attraction was once a real mortuary which I can attest to as I attended a funeral for my great-grandfather there and it was spooky then! Each year, they change their themes and this year is 2024 Hell-ection. Tickets start at $25.

New Orleans Nightmare (319 Butterworth St) :: Originally known as the House of Shock, this haunted house was voted “One of the Top Haunted Houses in America” by Discovery Channel. Their fright season begins on Friday, September 13th. Tickets start at $19.99.

Ghost Tours – Our city has many tours to choose from to discover our haunted history. Below are a few of the stops that you can encounter!

  • LaLaurie Mansion (1138 Royal St) :: This home has a very devastating and cruel past and it can’t seem to hold on to an owner. Legend has it that many ghosts of the past still wander the halls and can be seen jumping from the windows into the courtyard to escape Madame LaLaurie.
  • St. Louis Cemetary No. 1 (426 Basin St) :: Say “hello” to the Voodoo Priestess Marie Laveau at her tomb. If you’re lucky, she may grant your wish!

Baton Rouge

13th Gate (832 St. Philip St) :: You will experience 13 different realms through this ultimate haunted house if you dare! Opening day is September 27th and November 1st and 2nd are special Flashlight Fright Nights if you need more scare! Tickets start at $35. A mini escape room and ax throwing are also available for an additional fee.

Beauregard Parish

Gothic Jail After Dark (205 W. 1st St, Deridder) :: This now abandoned but still very haunted jail hosts day tours and special night events such as their paranormal investigations of lantern tours!

Tangipahoa

RISE Haunted House (10342 LA-442, Tickfaw) :: This venue has 3 attractions that will scare you senseless! The Haunted Hayride is advised for children and adults who decide they are too scared. Open Saturday, September 28th – Saturday, November 2nd. Tickets start at $20 and vary per attraction but combo packages are available as well.

West Feliciana Parish

The Myrtles Plantation (7747 US Hwy 61, St. Francisville) :: I have personally gone on the tour here at least twice and stayed overnight and the spook is to die for! They also have a restaurant that has great food and drinks!

The Haunted Hotel (623 Ursulines Ave) :: Stay the night if you date at this haunted hotel which was built in 1829 and has been the home to many “unexplained” murders over the past hundreds of years. Prices vary depending on peak seasons.

Dauphine Orleans Hotel (415 Dauphine St) :: This location was once a home and then a brothel and its history has much to tell. In 1969, when it was resurrected as a hotel, it inherited some paranormal guests who refuse to leave.

Hotel Monteleone (214 Royal St) :: This pet-friendly hotel is said to be haunted on the 14th floor as well as in its Carousel Bar & Lounge and footsteps of ghost child Maurice Begere are often heard in the hallways.

Bourbon Orleans Hotel (717 Orleans St) :: This is said to be the most haunted hotel in New Orleans. Originally a convent, this hotel is home to a ghostly ballroom dancer as well as the smell of cigars from guests long ago.

The Pontchartrain Hotel (2031 St. Charles Ave) :: This hotel is said to be the home of many ghosts after a massive fire in 1929. Ghostly sisters haunt the 11th floor while a famed pianist plays a tune.
