Preparing for State Testing: 5 Best Pre-Test Brain Foods

Fuel for the Mind

Kids (and parents) are stressed out this week with state testing coming up and some already underway. Give your little’s the best possible start by feeding their brains with healthy, simple meals and snacks during the testing window.

  1. Nuts – High in protein, good fats and just the right amount of carbohydrates, nuts are our #1 brain food before tests. Spread that natural nut butter on toast, let those kiddos eat them raw, whatever it takes. Almonds and Cashews are known to improve memory, while Peanuts may not provide the boost you’re looking for. Even sunflower seeds count!
  2. Bananas – These babies are full of fiber, vitamins and science says they enhance brain function and memory.
  3. Apples – A natural anti-anxiety, apples are shown to relax the brain and increase sensory perception.
  4. Blueberries – Another food that improves memory, concentration, decision making, and verbal comprehension. Not to mention they’re chock-full of antioxidants!
  5. Eggs – Loaded with vitamins, minerals and healthy fats, eggs keep kids full and fight fatigue.

Avoid any foods high in fat or sugar, which may provide energy spikes that are short-lived and create fatigue.

Recipe for Success

Pair some of the above selections with protein-rich, low-fat milk or string cheese, whole grain pretzels and hummus or some oatmeal, and you have yourself a kid who has been given the best opportunity to succeed.
