I Have 3 Personalities … How Many Do You Have?

Personality PicI recently had a long weekend getaway with a friend of mine. It was just a quick trip to get away from reality for a few days and let our kids have some fun time away from home. I didn’t realize how much I didn’t really know my friend until we were actually there. I had been with her mostly in a work type environment or when our kids had play dates. I had never really been around her away from the stress and daily grind of to do lists and meetings.

I will never forget the moment I realized that I was about to see another side of her. We weren’t in the hotel 5 minutes when she jumped up on the bed and started having a pillow fight with the kids. It was as if she had been transformed into another place where this other personality could come out.

I was completely dumbfounded. This organized, always prepared and planned woman was having a pillow fight and jumping on the bed. I LOVED it! … so I joined in too!

Some of us realize it; some of us don’t. We act one way around certain people and a completely different way around others. We act serious in some environments and like our 3 year old in others. This got me to thinking about the different personalities I have.

The Home Me

I admit it. That pillow fight was incredibly fun! The home me will do things like this all the time. For instance, my husband and I have sock fights with the kids almost every time I’m doing the laundry. Translation: we roll the matching socks into a ball and throw it at each other. In fact, just the other night, the kids wanted to play a joke on our neighbors, so my husband and I parked our cars in front of their garage. They couldn’t get in and had no idea why our cars were there, but not us. The kids laughed for over an hour and still talk about how much fun it was. (Don’t worry – the neighbors loved it too!) I like to call this the silly me. The goofy me. The kid me.

There are people I have worked with for years that will never believe I have sock fights or play jokes on the neighbors. They may even be reading this right now completely convinced that this is a fiction story rather than a blog post! The work me is much more serious professional and would never throw a sock at anyone! (That’s not to say I wouldn’t shrink wrap their office supplies on their birthdays though). Shhh … don’t tell tell the boss!

The Public Me

This one comes out when I have to put my best self forward – that first play date with my daughter’s school friend and her mom or the first time I meet my daughter’s teacher. It’s the side of me that hasn’t gotten comfortable enough to let my guard down.

I believe the personality that I knew of my friend was this one. I knew the side that she let the public see. I knew the one that had to be professional and appear to be on top of things, have everything in control. That’s not to say I don’t like that personality of hers. After all, I did choose to go on vacation with her after only knowing that side. It was that side that led me to be her friend. It was that side that allowed me the opportunity to get to know the other sides as well.

Something tells me that she has realized my other personalities since that time too!

Have you ever noticed your personality differences in specific situations? How many personalities do you have? Who do you allow to see each of your personalities?
