Perspectives in Parenting

Perspectives in parenting, mom with special needs child coloring

Sometimes you just need to hear the ideas, thoughts, and opinions of other parents. Our Perspectives in Parenting section is focused on providing a place for you to find out what other moms are thinking and how they are handling the issues that go along with the hard job of being a parent.

There are a lot of different perspectives in parenting and New Orleans Mom is a place where these different ideas can be shared. We strive to provide not just valuable information to mothers across the Crescent City, but also ideas about how to think about the issues in their lives.

In our Perspectives in Parenting section, you’ll find lots of stories about the everyday events, problems, annoyances, and issues that we all face as moms. We talk about the household and the challenges of keeping everyone in the family working together.  We offer tips on how to recognize and reflect on the good things in our lives. We also tackle difficult topics about our society and culture

Some of our perspectives in parenting stories offer key advice on wellness. We take you through some of the challenging parts of motherhood, like how and when to use a breast pump, while also offering an amusing look at alternative uses of breastmilk

Our writers talk about important things that Moms in the Big Easy need to know, such as how to teach financial responsibility to your children or how to survive the stresses of the holiday season.

With more than 30 contributors to New Orleans Mom, we offer our readers unique Big Easy perspectives in parenting that they won’t find anywhere else.

Summer is just around the corner and that means family vacay time for many of us. I've never been a fan of road trips personally, but they can't always be avoided (trust me, I tried). If you're tired of...
Over the past few weeks of reckoning with racial violence, I have seen many of my friends sharing the same idea: We will teach our kids to do better. I feel the same way, and have shared this sentiment myself....

We are thrilled to introduce our community to eleven new members of the New Orleans Moms Blog team. Each one is a dynamic, warm and inspiring New Orleans mom, and we can’t wait for you all to get to...
My kid eats slow. Let me back up. My kid eats so slow that he probably doesn't know that most meals prepared are meant to be enjoyed warm. He eats so slowly, the idea of "breakfast" in the morning,...
When we first brought Addison home from the hospital at the end of September 2011, the doctors and nurses preached to us about keeping her quarantined during cold and flu season to reduce the risk of contracting RSV. At the...
We are searching for a new neighborhood in New Orleans! Our family has expanded since our DINK days, and we are in need of more space. This may or may not be forever for us, so I’m spending lots...
As temperatures rise throughout the summer months, so does the need for parents and caregivers to be extra vigilant about never leaving young children alone in a hot car. Since 1990, more than 1,000 children have died in these...
Children of Divorce Children of divorce. Wow -that’s such a hard statement to even type, but the truth is-- it’s just a reality for my two daughters (who I had with my first husband). Never in my wildest, darkest dreams...
We are forever thankful. As a same sex couple, we never imagined that we would be allowed to adopt children. We grew up in an era where that was never going to happen. We were judged simply because we...
Thoughts on being done having babies and having baby fever The two don't seem to go hand in hand, but for me they do. You see my husband and I started out young. We got married at nineteen and twenty...
I knew I wanted to breastfeed. I’ll be honest, mainly because it’s free and I never pass up a deal. Eventually, as I learned more about it, I came to appreciate the health benefits, the bond and the convenience. While...
Oh, pregnancy brain. That crazy, foggy sensation where you do silly things for unknown reasons and don’t quite realize what’s wrong until your mistake has already been made.  I’m on my third pregnancy now, and the pregnancy brain just keeps...
“Why fit in when you were born to stand out,” says the sensible Dr. Seuss. This quote fits this year's World Down Syndrome Day well. On Saturday, March 21st, the entire world will celebrate people living with an extra 21st chromosome who...
