Please allow me to introduce myself. I am Julie Fortenberry, a registered dietitian who now (after many years of fighting it) proudly calls New Orleans home. The move to the big “Crescent City,” for this Mississippi girl, was overwhelming...
By the time baby #2 arrived, I was well on my way to my mid-thirties. I noticed a few gray hairs here and there but nothing crazy. Then about three months postpartum, it started. My thick and flowing pregnancy...
If you haven't heard about Nola Nesting's event tonight, it's not too late to treat yourself to a night out with fellow NOLA moms! Nola Nesting has partnered with East Jefferson Hospital to host a screening of BREASTMILK: The...
I love my children. I was very blessed to have three fairly large (for triplets), healthy (for preemies) babies, born at a gestation greater than most triplets. My pregnancy was (except for the obvious) mostly uneventful, and even though...
Silence filled the room. We sat waiting, wondering. The doctor who delivered my last son arrived to perform the ultrasound. Within seconds, she found it. A tiny little blob on the monitor. A tiny little blob that would rock...
Today, September 4, 2013, is my son Levi's first birthday. I’ve been in quite the nostalgic mood, in the midst of busily planning a Baby Einstein-themed birthday bash for my fun-loving little guy. I can’t help but think back on...
As a new mama and family nurse practitioner, I am often torn about my role in my home. I frequently have to remind myself that I am just Mama. It is hard to forget my medical knowledge and let...
Man down! Over the past few weeks, I have been tested to the extreme! My children have been sick. More sick than ever. And my partner, the man I rely on for support, tore his Achilles' tendon, rendering him completely...
Last Thursday I found myself at the red light on the corner of South Carrollton and Palmetto. As I glanced around, I saw the new wholesale complex being completed whose doors open in mid September: Costco. As I drove...
A couple of weekends ago I attended a typical New Orleans baby shower for a cousin. The mother-to-be looked radiant in her brilliant blue dress, there were fleur de lis embossed blue mints, napoleons on the dessert table and,...
My child has a peanut allergy. While this is something that we deal with every day, I am focused on not letting this allergy interfere with her daily life. I am against taking the “bubble kid” approach; she goes...
One of the things I have picked up on as a new mother is that each of our journeys and choices are unique to us, and that regardless of those choices, we share a common thread…we are mothers who...
As with many mothering topics, child birth can feel a little divisive at times. When mothers make different parenting decisions or differing situations lead to divergent choices, it can be hard for women to know how to find common...
Late last month I officially entered my mid 30s. I was looking forward to this day much like a trip to the DMV. In addition, two gentlemen, not much younger than I, referred to me as "ma'am" during the...
